RC claims SAC conference title, tunes up for volleyball district

The Rogers City Huron volleyball team remained perfect at tournament day?s end in Alcona Saturday after downing all six Straits Area Conference competitors. The Hurons claimed wins over St. Ignace, 15-8 and 15-6, Rudyard, 15-0, 15-3, Newberry, 15-7, 15-4, Alcona, 15-4, 15-1, Onaway 15-2, 15-2, and Inland Lakes 15-2 and 15-10.

District play is scheduled at RCHS Saturday with the Hurons set to play Boyne City at 11:30 a.m. See the graphic for other matchups and times. Lauren Fairbanks led the Hurons Saturday with 51 kills, 40 digs, 36 set assists and six ace serves, followed by teammate Ashley Fleming with 35 kills, 36 digs, seven blocks and six aces.

Megan Grulke added 10 kills, 45 digs and eight ace serves, while Becky Bruning had 22 kills, 30 digs, two blocks and seven aces. Megan Hanson contributed 28 digs and 68 set assists along with nine ace serves. In a makeup game, the Hurons traveled to Pickford Monday to face both Pickford and St. Ignace.

THE WEEK of perfection was not spoiled as the Hurons rallied to the call and swept the scoreboard to the tune of 15-4 and 15-4 against the Pickford team and 15-10 and 15-6 against the Saints. Speaking of perfection, Ashley Fleming knocked n

o less than 15 ace serves over the net on the day, along with 14 kills and 11 digs.

Fairbanks had 16 kills, 12 digs, 10 set assists and one block, while Bruning added seven kills, 10 digs, two set assists, one block and two aces. Hanson contributed 25 set assists, six digs, and four aces, while Grulke added 14 digs and four ace serves. The match record now stands at 32-17-4 and the conference record is 28-2.

?The girls played very well and are really coming together as a team,? said coach Kristy Smolinski. ?We meet Gaylord and Pellston Wednesday on home court for our last home match of the regular season.?
