Tops students named for OHS Class of ’03

Onaway High School principal Matt Lukshaitis has announced the honor graduates for the Class of 2003. Earning the honor of valedictorian is Carl Bednark with a grade point average of 3.986. Jay Diller is salutatorian with a grade point average of 3.868, and Jim Burkhead is the honor student with a grade point average of 3.826.

Carl Bednark is the son of Christopher and Patricia Bednark. He is vice president of the National Honor Society, and received a $1000 scholarship from the Knights of Columbus. Carl is a three-year member of the student council, and was varsity captain of golf and basketball. He has participated in golf, basketball, ski club, outdoor rec club, knowledge bowl, marching and symphonic band for four years. Carl has been a member of the National Honor Society for the past two years. and has been a student athlete of the week and month. Following graduation, Carl will pursue a degree in engineering.

Jay Michael Diller is the son of Gregory M. and Mary K. Diller. He is a president of the National Honor Society. Jay is a four-year member of the student council and has been a class officer for four years. Jay has participated in football, basketball, track, band, pep band, knowledge bowl, outdoor rec club and ski club. Jay has been on the National Honor Roll for two years. He has been in the king?s court for three years and was king his senior year. Jay has been a teacher?s and gym assistant. Following graduation, Jay will major in criminal justice and minor in military science and is also enrolled in the army ROTC program at Michigan State University.

James Burkhead is the son of Robert and Teresa Mount. He is class vice president. James has participated in track, chess club, art club and has been a teacher?s assistant. Following graduation he plans to attend North Central Michigan College for a year or two and transfer to a four year computer science school perhaps Michigan Tech. Amanda Bliemeister, 3.826, is the daughter of Marshal and Lisa Bliemeister. She is a member of the National Honor Society and received a scholarship from Aurora Gas Company. Amanda has been on the student council and served as a class officer, president for two of those years. Bliemeister has participated in basketball, volleyball and softball. She was a teacher?s assistant. and a Wendy?s Heinemann state finalist. Following graduation Amanda plans to attend college and pursue a degree in pre-medicine, continuing on to medical school to become a doctor.

David Lee Schlaufman, 3.647, is the son of Donald and Joyce Schlaufman. He is a member of the National Honor Society. David is also a member of the student council and has been a class officer for four years. He is serving as class president . He has participated in basketball, golf, marching and symphonic band, baseball, pep band, band, was on the king?s court and a teacher?s assistant. Following graduation David plans to attend Central Michigan University to minor in teaching and major in sports medicine or massage therapy.

Tyler Mundy, 3.563, is the son of Orville and Teri Mundy. He has participated in track, golf and snowboarding and has been a teacher?s assistant. Following graduation Tyler will attend North Central Michigan College.

Christa Coulston, 3.538, is the daughter of James Coulston and Jane Martin. She is a member of the National Honor Society. Christa has participated in softball, weightlifting, the yearbook staff, and basketball. She has been a teacher?s assistant, homecoming queen and is listed in Who?s Who Among American high school students. staff. Following graduation Christa will enroll at Ferris State University, where she will obtain a bachelor?s degree in the field of criminology and pursue a master?s degree in forensics.

Kara Nagle, 3.537, is the daughter of Raymond and Patrice Grinnell. She is member and secretary of the National Honor Society. Kara has been on the student council, a teacher?s assistant, participated in track, art club, volleyball, SADD, drama club, outdoor rec club and was a gym assistant. Following graduation Kara will on attend Wayne State University for pre-medical studies and go on to Michigan State University for veterinary medicine.

Jeremy Barnby, 3.426, is the son of David and Mary Jo Barnby. He is a member of the National Honor Society. Jeremy is also a member of pep band, knowledge bowl and student council. He has participated in football, basketball and band. Following graduation Jeremy is enlisting in the United States Army, at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. His first duty station is in Korea. He will be attending college while in the armed forces, working toward a degree in business. Jessica Schaedig, 3.297, is the daughter of Hugh and Marji Schaedig. She is a member of the National Honor Society. Jessica has participated in the art club and has been a teacher?s assistant. Following graduation Jessica plans on taking a year off school, then willpursue a degree as a veterinary technician or art teacher.

Cassie Rae Hyde, 3.234, is the daughter of Cliff and Jerilyn Hyde. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has been on the student council. Cassie has participated in basketball. She has been a teacher?s assistant and office assistant and was on the queen?s court. Following graduation Cassie plans to attend North Central Michigan College and pursue a degree in nursing.

Alex Forth, 3.312, is the son of Martin and LuAnn Forth. He has been a teacher?s and gym assistant, was on the king?s court and has participated in football, basketball and baseball. Following graduation Alex plans to enroll in college, possibly the University of Michigan, and work toward a degree in law. He plans on moving back to warm Texas.

Lindsay Morell, 3.187, is the daughter of Jeffrey and Tammy Morell. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has served on the student council for two years. Lindsay has participated in SADD, Natural Helper?s, the outdoor rec club and was on the winter homecoming court. Following graduation Lindsay plans to attend Western Michigan University to pursue a bachelor?s degree in social work.

Lucas Dean, 3.169, is the son of Mark and Leora Dean. He is a member of the National Honor Society. Lucas has been a teacher?s assistant and mentor to elementary students. Following graduation Lucas plans on furthering his education in computer sciences.

Michael Brown, 3.102, is the son of Robert and Sandra Brown. He is a member of the National Honor Society. Michael has participated in the building trades and has been a teacher?s assistant. Following graduation he plans on going to North Central Michigan College for two years, then moving on to Lake Superior State University to pursue a bachelor?s degree in wildlife management.

Ashley Joy Wilk, 3.071, is the daughter of Gary and Jenna Wilk. She is a member of the National Honor Society. Ashley has participated in pep, concert and marching band, drama club, choir and

4-H. She was Miss Onaway second runner up, 2001 and 2002, Miss Congeniality in 2001 and Jr. Miss Millersburg talent winner, 2002. Ashley has also been a teachers assistant and office worker. Following graduation Ashley will attend Michigan State University to study deaf education.

Rocco Cope, 3.065, is the son of Rocco and Rebekah Cope. He has participated in baseball, 4-H and football. Rocco has also been a teacher?s and gym assistant and was on the king?s court. Following graduation he plans to go to a community college for general education classes then transfer to a university to get a Ph.D. in pediatrics.

Scott Campbell, 3.006, is the son of Steven and Debbie Campbell. He has participated in golf, baseball, band, pep band, wrestling, and has been a teacher?s assistant. Following graduation Scott plans to become an indoor electrician.
