COLUMNIST GAIL MAGGI: Shhhh!

I should have known it would only be a matter of time in this day and age of electronic wizardry that I?d get caught with my foot in my mouth, so to speak.

I was talking to our daughter Gabe stationed in Germany this Sunday, when she suddenly said to me, ?Hey Ma! I want you to mail me a subscription to the Advance in Germany….Carissa Cetus gets it sent to her,? she said with a twinge of authority in her voice. ?Ah…oh, sure, I can do that…no problem, Sweetie Pie,? I answered, waiting for her to continue.

?Ah, Ma…Carissa said she knew I had been playing cards…and that I had a mouse on the toe of my boot!? she stated.

?Oh, well, honey,? I pacified her, ?I wrote about it in my column…people have told me again and again how they like to hear about you.?

?Sheesh, Ma! What else are you writing about? People write to me and I don’t even know who they are…they are very nice, but what are you writing?? she asked.

?WELL, JUST what I hear from you…you know, just kind of entertaining stuff,? I pleaded my case feebly, feeling my way through the conversation.

?Well, OK, but just send me that subscription, OK??

Whew! I felt I was off the hook momentarily. But now I?ll have to watch carefully what I write, as it seems the Advance gets around to lots of servicemen from our county, and apparently they do keep in touch.

It was good to hear that servicemen friends keep in contact with one another. Carissa told Gabe she was working with a gal who had gone through Air Force tech training about the same time as Gabe in Texas, and apparently this gal look, acts, and reminded Carissa of Gabe so much that one day she said to her, ?Do you know Gabe Maggi? I think she may have gone through training at the same time you did.?

Well, the girl did go through training at the same time and turned out to be one of Gabe?s best friends from her training days! Small world, and it gets smaller every day with electronic communications.

THIS HAS been a joyous week for family and friends of the recovered POWs in Iraq. What a joy to see the family members? faces after what must have been a horrendous experience, knowing their loved ones were prisoners of the Iraqi thugs.

But the praying continues for those still over there and for those stationed in the far corners of the Earth. Hopefully this war will bring itself to a timely conclusion and many will return unharmed. On the home front, area residents have had their own battles this past week with an outrageous snowstorm that put most people out of commission for at least a day or so.

A hearty applause to our city?s DPW crew and the

PI County Road Commission crews who put so many hours of hard work into digging out the area roads, sidewalks, and businesses. They deserve everyone?s appreciation and a pat on the back for a job well done. Let?s hope the warm sunshine this week will complete the job and put a final end to winter?s roar. It obviously came in like a lamb and is going out like a lion.

Speaking of spring, Easter has popped up right in front of my nose. I can?t believe Ash Wednesday was so long ago. Where does all the time disappear? I feel like I?m on a toboggan and when I reach the bottom of the hill, another month has slipped by.

I?ll have to remember to get off once in a while and smell the roses…you know…the flowers that will eventually begin to come up, because even up north, it will turn into spring soon!
