Ponik makes NSL first team in basketball

PHS Viking forward Matt Ponik was named to the North Star League all-conference basketball squad, while junior guard Ron Kroll earned an honorable mention post-season award. Ponik, a sophomore, with his team-leading 15.1 points and 10.6 rebounds a contest, joined league most valuable player Cory McDonald of Hillman on the first team.

Kroll averaged 9.7 points per game. If injuries or other circumstances don?t get in the way, Kroll and Ponik should be a dominant force in the North Star League. They are two of the four returning starters. The Vikings should be balanced as well. Coach Ron Misiak will have two guards, Luke Hentkowski and Kroll; a forward, Ponik; and a bruising center, Aaron Hincka.

Hincka, a sophomore, and junior point guard Hentkowski will bring a wealth of experience to the court next season to go with Kroll and Ponik?s scoring prowess. Viking coach Ron Misiak is excited, and with the work ethic the players have showed, he sees nothing but improvement. The biggest loss will be the four graduating seniors, including Pat Bronikowski. Posen won seven of its l

ast 10 games to finish 12-9, plus the Vikes led district champ Hillman by 13, before the Tigers rallied for the win.

?We have a great nucleus of kids coming back,? said Misiak. ?They are some hard working kids. If we get rolling at the beginning of the year, we should do well.? Senior Nathan Timm from Hillman also made the first team. The other two all-conference players are Jeremy Taylor of Fairview and Brandon Thompson of Hale. Oscoda County was well represented on the second team. Mio placed John Larrison and Kenny Provost, while Josh Wiedbrauk and Adam Wysocki from Fairview were selected to the second team.

Joining them are Eric Ball of Atlanta and George Estabrook of Au Gres.
