Softball team still undefeated

New head coach Karl Grambau has started undefeated in his first week as the Hurons swept Posen and St. Ignace. Heading into Wednesday?s games with Gaylord, the Hurons had not been scored on. In the first home doubleheader of the season, the Hurons chalked up two shutouts against Straits Area Conference rival St. Ignace Tuesday, 14-0, 17-0. The Hurons batted first as the visiting team, as the games were moved from St. Ignace to the more playable field in Rogers City.

Senior Rachel Brege was as sharp as the Huron hitters were hard on Saints? pitching, registering 17 hits. Neither team had the offense going until the Hurons got things going in the fourth inning with a five-run rally. Rogers City added three in the fifth inning and six more in the seventh. Meanwhile Brege had her heat going in the freezing cold of Gilpin Field, striking out seven batters and allowing one hit in six innings of work. Alison Schuiteman finished, striking out two batters in one inning.

ASHLEY FLEMING AND Theresa Bellmore had three hits each, each scoring three runs. Bellmore had two doubles. Rogers City had more success in the second game, belting 12 hits, and benefiting from eight Saint errors. This time, the Hurons wasted no time, scoring four in the first, three in the second, three more in the third, one in the fourth and six runs in the fifth inning. Ashley Fleming started, going four innings for the win. She allowed one hit and a walk while striking out nine batters. Schuiteman worked the final inning and struck out two of the three batters she faced.

Senior catcher Angie Asam had three hits from the leadoff spot. Megan Grulke had three hits, including a home run, as she reached base five times in the contest.

LAST WEEK in Posen, the Hurons got their season off to a good start with a pair of wins over the Vikings, 12-0, 10-0. Brege got the start and the win, working the first four innings. She didn?t walk anyone and allowed just one hit while striking out one. Schuiteman pitched the fifth inning and struck out one batter.

Asam had three hits while Grulke had two. Rogers City had big innings in the second, with four runs, and in the fourth, with five. In the second game Fleming earned the win with five innings of one-hit work. She struck out one and walked two in earning her first win of the season. She added three hits. Senior shortstop Renee Romel and Bellmore had two hits each.

?We?ve had really good pitching and really good defense so far,? Grambau said of his team?s 4-0 start. The team will be tested with a busy schedule next week. The week starts with a doubleheader in Petoskey Monday, followed by a pair of games Tuesday with Rudyard.

THIS SATURDAY the Huron varsity and junior varsity will play the 100-inning game, rescheduled from last week. The annual fundraising event is a fun way

to build team unity and raise money for uniforms and equipment. Players will be asking for pledges and donations will be accepted at the game.

JUNIOR VARSITY SOFTBALL

The Huron junior varsity softball team started its season with a pair of wins over Inland Lakes Tuesday.

In the first game, the Hurons took a 12-2 win, knocking nine hits to the Bulldogs? one in the five-inning mercy-rule contest. Jessica Konieczny pitched the first four innings, earning the win. Megan Hanson worked the final inning. Sarah Dove had three hits and scored three runs. Becky Bruning added two hits in the Huron win.

IN THE SECOND game, the Hurons smashed 13 hits in a 14-2 win. Hanson collected four hits and earned the win on the mound. Liesa Kelley had three hits while Samantha Hurst added two. Keith Konieczny coaches the JV. Chuck and Michelle Krueger are assistant coaches .
