Sports seasons are set to begin in wintry north

Huron varsity baseball team is expected to open its season Saturday (April 12) at the Morley Stanwood tournament. The first pitch is expected at 10 a.m. against the Freeland Falcons.

The RC softball team will have to wait a while before playing its first games becasue a tournament was cancelled in Alcona Saturday.

The Huron baseball team went further into the tournament than any other area team last season, winning the district and regional titles, before losing in the quarterfinals. Coach Howard Madsen, in his 22nd year at the helm, has many new faces on the team, which is looking for its 14th straight district title.

The Posen baseball team begins its season Thursday (April 10) at a tournament in Bay City. Coach Pat Kowalski has been hampered by the winter weather, forcing all indooor practices. The same situation is faced by all schools in northern Michigan as last week’s huge snowfall rapidly melts.

Coach Glen Budnick has 11 letter winners coming back from last year’s very successful team.
