Track season opens in the cold at Inland Lakes

After forcing the postponement of several meets, the weather finally allowed a make-up meet for ten schools at the Inland Lakes Twilight Invitational Monday afternoon. There was only one no-show (Forest Area Schools), but nine others braved the cold, rain, and even a few snowflakes to get the season finally underway. In the girls? meet, Rogers City placed fifth with 60 points behind first place Harbor Springs (111), Bellaire (102), St. Mary (90), and Inland Lakes (89).

Other schools were, in order of finish, Rudyard, Onaway, Joburg, and Alanson. Lauren Fairbanks claimed three firsts in the high jump (5?1?), 1600m run (5:38), and the 800m run (2:32), chalking up 30 points to the team score. Charity Lewis had second place in two events, the shot put (30?6?) and the discus (95?3?), giving her team 16 points. Lacey Kreft was second in the 3200m run (12:40) and third in the 1600m run (5:55).

IN THE BOYS? events, the Hurons placed seventh with 20 points following first place Harbor Springs (179), St. Mary (119), Joburg (59), Inland Lakes (49), Bellaire (43) and Onaway (21). Others in order of finish were Rudyard and Alanson. Tony Fleming placed second in the long jump (18?7?) and third in the high jump (5?7?) to produce 14 points for the team score. Aaron Smuda was fourth in the 3200m run (10:57) and fifth in the 1600m run (4:55), adding six points. The Hurons went back-to-back, returning to Inland Lakes Tuesday for the traditional M-65/68 Meet, this year hosted by the Bulldogs. The Huron girls took second place (105) behind Inland Lakes with 145 points, Onaway (61) and Posen (43).

IN THE GIRLS? events, Fairbanks took three firsts: the high jump (5?3?), the 400m dash (1:02), and the 3200m run (12:32). Lewis took firsts in discus (93?3?) and shot put (29?3 1/4?), while Kreft was first in the 1600m run (5:56) and second in the 3200m run (13:04).

Susan Getzmeyer took second in the 100m dash (14:51) and third in the long jump (13?4?), while Jessica Brown took second in the long jump (13?4?). Also the girls 800m relay team took second place (2:09) with Brown, AmyHopp, Kelly Lingo, and Sara Belusar running the event.

Third place in the 400m relay (102.66

) went to Brown, Susan Getzmeyer, Lingo, and Belusar and also in the 1600m relay (5:23) with Susan Getzmeyer, Janna Schaedig, Heather Lung, and Brown running the event.

IN THE BOYS? events, Kyle Greene took firsts in the shot put (46?11?) and the discus (120?6?) and was second place in the high jump (5?8?). Tony Fleming was first in the high jump (5?10?) and second in the long jump (18?4?). Aaron Smuda was first in the 1600m run (5:12), the 3200m run (11:37) and second in the 800m run (2:23). Also the boys 1600m relay team took second place, with Jacob Brown, Adam Zinke, Fleming, and Smuda running the event.

The Hurons will be back in action Saturday at the Mio Invitational, followed by the Steiner Invitational at Bellaire Monday.
