Baseball team sweeps Soo Tuesday

?We played really well, all the balls that were getting caught last week were dropping in today,? said Huron coach Howard Madsen after his team swept Sault Ste. Marie in games played in the U.P. Tuesday. Rogers City won the games by scores of 13-3 and 11-0. Aaron Florip had the hot bat in the first game, going four-for-four in the 16-hit attack. Cody Hurst and Adam LaLonde each had three hits.

LALONDE EARNED the win on the mound, going five innings, striking out four and walking one while allowing four hits. Judd Vekaryasz took the win in the second game, surrendering two hits while striking out five and walking one batter. Florip again had his batting eye tuned in, banging out two hits to complete a six-for-six afternoon. Vekaryasz contributed three hits while Hurst and Cody Wenzel each added two. The Hurons scored three in the first, one in the second, five in the fourth and two more in the fifth inning.

LAST WEEK, the Hurons split a pair of doubleheaders at home. Last Thursday, Rogers City won game one, 4-2, then lost 12-10 in the nightcap to Ogemaw Heights. In the first game, LaLonde went six innings, striking out three and allowing six hits to earn the win. Trailing 2-1, the Hurons scored three times in the fifth inning. Brandon Gorlewski singled, and was replaced by pinch runner Jon Konieczny. Nathan Darga singled, and Wenzel sacrificed to move runners to second and third. Vekaryasz walked to load the bases. Then Florip delivered a two-run single. The third run scored on an error.

OGEMAW CAME back with an 11-hit attack in the second game. The visitors scored two in the second, six in the third and four in the seventh inning. Wenzel worked the first 6 2/3, allowing all 11 hits and five earned runs. Vekaryasz and LaLonde each had two hits for the Hurons. Friday the Newberry Indian

s split a pair with the Hurons. Rogers City won 12-7 in the first game and Newberry took the second by a score of 5-3. Hurst?s two singles and a home run sparked the hitting attack for the Hurons. Justin Grulke, Tim Cercone and Wenzel had two hits each. Vekaryasz went all the way, striking out four and allowing 11 hits.

A FOUR-RUN fifth inning for the Indians spelled defeat for the Hurons in the second game. Rogers City scored single runs in the first, third, and fifth innings. Hurst suffered the loss, working the first 4 1/3 innings. He had a single and a double while Florip added two singles and a sacrifice.

The Hurons are now 15-7 heading into Saturday?s tournament at Ogemaw Heights. Rogers City hosts Hillman Monday, plays at Inland Lakes Thursday, then hosts the A-P Super Service Tournament May 24 in the final home games of the regular season.
