?Drunk? hign school seniors take over Stoney Links Golf Course

Driving golf carts and wearing special goggles that simulate what it?s like to drive under the influence of alcohol, Onaway High School seniors took over Stoney Links Golf Course last Thursday while driving ?drunk.? The seniors learned after getting behind the steering wheel of the golf carts how impaired a person becomes when drinking alcohol. The Presque Isle County Sheriff?s Department had the goggles on hand, receiving them from a grant previously.

Deputy Joe Brewbaker from the sheriff?s department orchestrated the event to simulate drunk driving and to demonstrate how to drive defensively. In their attempts to drive correctly while wearing the goggles, several seniors destroyed a make-believe garage, wiped out cones that marked the course, and some slid sideways to a stop, almost running people down.

Brewbaker said, ?It was just an idea I had, I got together with senior class president David Schlaufman. He said that it might be a good idea, and we just threw it together.? ?We make the seniors first go through the course without the goggles and then with them.?

?It is funny, (after watching one of the seniors taking out the garage again), but on a serious note they do understand the point: drunk driving is a real serious matter,? said Brewbaker.

There are two different types of goggles, e

ach having a different degree of ?drunkenness to them,? One simulated a .07 to .10 legally intoxicated, and the other .17 to .20 legally intoxicated.

?Stoney Links was nice enough to let us use their course and golf carts. Mike Libby, the manager, said ?no problem,?? said Brewbaker.

Demonstrating the course using the goggles, deputy Corey Davis made some very wide turns and cut corners a little too sharply. Riding with him was Stefanie Van Den Bergh, foreign exchange student from Belgium.

Seniors, after learning Davis was going to show off for the Outlook, made the course a little more difficult for him.

Sheriff Terry Flewelling, along with undersheriff Bob Pasche, were also there to help Brewbaker with the ?drunk driving? seniors.
