Huron softball team to play Inland Lakes in district

It is time for the second season to begin for the Huron softball team as district play commences Saturday. The Hurons take on Inland Lakes, a 10-1 winner over Onaway in Tuesday?s pre-district game. That game is set for 12:30 p.m. Saturday. As of press time, the location was uncertain, given the construction in Onaway near the softball field. It may be moved to Rogers City.

The location of the game will be posted on the Advance?s website (www.PIAdvance.com) as soon as it is known. Newberry faces Rudyard in the opener at 10 a.m. ?I think we will do really well, if we play as well as we did against Alpena,? said coach Karl Grambau of his team?s chances.

THE HURONS had their only losing week of the season, splitting a pair of games with Inland Lakes May 22, then losing a close one at home to Alpena Tuesday. Against Alpena, Rachel Brege surrendered three runs in the third inning, and put up zeros the rest of the way, but it wasn?t enough to stop the Wildcats from winning, 3-2. Rogers City answered in the bottom of the third, putting up one run. C. J. Calabrese walked and scored on Renee Romel?s double. In the Huron sixth, a slew of base runners produced just one Huron run.

Ashley Fleming led off with a double to centerfield, and a pitch hit Angie A

sam. After two flyouts, Lindsey Fleming beat out an infield single to third. With bases loaded, Calabrese drew a walk, forcing in Ashley Fleming, who had two of her team?s four hits.

LAST THURSDAY at Inland Lakes, the Hurons split a doubleheader, winning the first 6-1, and losing 2-1 in the second game. In the first game, Rogers City scored four times in the opening inning and two more in the fourth. The Hurons had nine hits, led by Ashley Fleming with three hits and two RBI, and Theresa Bellmore with two hits and two RBI. Brege went seven innings, allowing one hit and one walk to go with seven strikeouts.

CALABRESE PITCHED all six innings in the second game, striking out six and walking four while allowing two hits and two runs. The Hurons scored their only run in the second inning, while Inland Lakes came back to score two in the bottom of the third. Romel had two of the Hurons? seven hits. Now 26-6, the Hurons will focus on the district, hoping to gain a berth in the regionals, set to be hosted by Rogers City for the first time ever on June 7.
