Hurons host home tournament Saturday

The Huron baseball team will put a cap on the home portion of the regular season by hosting the A-P Super Service Tournament Saturday. Rogers City faces off with Alcona in the 10 a.m. opener and Posen plays Boyne City in a noon game. The losers of the first two games will square off at 2 p.m. while the championship game is set for around 4 p.m. The Hillman Tigers came to town Monday and took a pair of games from the Hurons, 4-2 and 8-5.

IN THE FIRST game, Hillman scored one in the first off Judd Vekaryasz, but he closed the door in the next four innings. Rogers City scored two in the fourth inning, but surrendered three runs in the Hillman fifth inning. Aaron Florip took the loss for the Hurons, in relief of Vekaryasz. Cody Hurst had two of his team?s three hits.

IN THE SECOND game, Hillman scored one in the second, three in the third, two in the fourth, and two more in the fifth on the way to an 8-5 win. Adam LaLonde took the loss, working three innings while allowing four hits and five walks. Justin Kelley singled and was hit by a pitch two times. The Hurons rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning for two runs and had the tying run at the plate, before the third out was made.

LAST SATURDAY at a tournament in Ogemaw Heights, the Hurons split a pair of games, losing to Gladwin in the opener, and defeating Ogemaw in the consolation game. Huron bats went cold in the first game as they managed only one hit in an 8-0 loss. Florip?s fourth-inning single was the only dent in Gladwin?s armor in the contest. LaLonde started and went four innings. He allowed seven runs, two of them earned, struck out five, walked four, and allowed five hits.

Nathan Darga pitched the final inning. Vekaryasz took the win in the second game, a 6-1 score in favor of the Hurons. The junior righthander allowed one run and three hits in five innings. Florip pitched the final two innings, surrendering one hit while striking out one batter. The Hurons slammed 10 hits, led by Vekaryasz with three.

LAST THURSDAY, the Hurons won a pair of games in Onaway over the Cardinals, 1-0, and 6-4. Freshman Cody Wenzel shut out the Cards on

five hits and one walk in the opener. He struck out six in earning the win. The only run came in the Huron second inning. Tim Cercone singled and Dustin Streich pinch-ran for the catcher. Streich stole second and scored on a throwing error after a strikeout.

In game two with the Cards, Onaway tied the score 2-2 in the second, then the Hurons came back with three in the top of the third and one in the fourth. Florip, Hurst, Cercone, and Kelley each had two hits while Cercone added two RBI. Hurst got the win with 4 1/3 innings of two-hit pitching. He walked four and struck out three. Florip picked up the save.

The district tournament will be played in Onaway while the regional tournament is set in Rogers City June 7. THE HURONS will play the winner of the Onaway vs. Inland Lakes game at a time to be determined. the winner will play the winner of the Rudyard vs. Newberry game.
