RC track team in action

The Rogers City track team isn?t wasting any time after meets were canceled earlier because of weather conditions. The teams attended three meets this week. At the Steiner Invitational in Bellaire Monday, the Huron girls? team placed seventh (56) behind Boyne City (76), St. Francis (74), Bellaire (70), Benzie (69), Harbor Springs (59), and East Jordan (57).

Other schools were Charlevoix, Kingsley, Central Lake, McBain, Elk Rapids, Forest Area, and Buckley. The Huron girls took three firsts. Lauren Fairbanks was first in the 1600m run (5:32), while Lacey Kreft was seventh (5:54). Fairbanks also was first in the 800m run (2:29) and Charity Lewis was first in the discus (104?3?), while Jessica Hempel was 16th (75?10?). Lewis also was third in the shot put (28?11?) and Kreft placed fourth in the 3200m run (12:43). Fairbanks was third in the high jump (4?10?) and Kristyn Blackmer was sixth (4?6?). The 3200m relay team took fifth place (9:36).

IN THE BOYS? events, the Hurons placed 11th out of 15 teams with Suttons Bay in first place (119), followed by Kingsley (95), and Harbor Springs (81) third. It was a red-letter day for Rocky DeRoque when he blasted across the finish line in first place (2:04.61) in the 800m run, followed by Josh Wheelock of Benzie (2:04.68), Garrett Romero of East Jordan (2:05.14) and Peter Gorkiewicz of Charlevoix (2:06.90). It was a breathtaking photofinish race with only inches between the runners.

Kyle Greene placed in three events, taking fifth place in both the high jump (5?7?) and the shot put (44-3 1/2?), and seventh place in the discus (125?1?). Aaron Smuda was eighth in the 3200m run (10:50), and the relay team took fifth place in the 3200m (9:36).

IN THE MIO Invitational Saturday, the girls took third place (87) behind Alcona (175) and Mio (124). Lewis set a new Invitational record with her first place discus throw (100?4?), not even her best attempt this year, and Hempel was sixth in the event (73?4?). Lewis took second in the shot put (30?4?) and Fairbanks took second in the high jump (4?6?). Fairbanks set a new invitational record in the 1600m run (5:33.84) and Kreft was right behind her for second place (5:58).

Kreft also set a new Invitational record with her first place finish in the 3200m run (12:35.45), and Fairbanks took another first in the 800m run (2:29), chopping her previous time by three seconds. Blackmer tied Christine Vereilen from Pinconning with her high jump (4?3?).

Jessica Brown was sixth in the long jump (12?2?) and was sixth in 100m dash (14.81). The relay team of Susan Getzmeyer, Fairbanks, Blackmer, and Kreft took second in the 1600m relay (4:50) Sara Belusar, Amy Hopp, Brown and Blackmer were fourth in the 400m relay (59.90). Belusar also took sixth place in the 400m dash (1:14). In the 800m relay, Getzmeyer, Heather Lung, Kelly Lingo, and Hopp took fifth (2:11).

IN THE BOYS? events, the Hurons were sixth (52) behind first place Mio (134), Hale (113.5), Pinconning, Alcona (77), and Grayling (61.50). Greene set a new Invitational record in the discus (132?7?), upping his previous yearly best by 12?1?. Greene also was third in the shot put (44?5?), and third in the high jump (5?8?). Smuda set a new Invitational record with his first place 3200m run (10:49), knocking almost eight seconds off his previous record. Smuda also placed third in the 1600m run (5:04).

DeRoque took third place in both the 400m dash (55.58) and the 800m run (2:14), and Isaac Momrik was fifth in the 110m high hurdles (19.05). LAST THURSDAY, the Hurons turned their attention to the Boyne City Rotary Invitational, and once again Fairbanks came up with two gold medals for the girls in the 800m run (2:23) and the 1600m run (5:30), and added a third place in the high jump (4?9?). RCHS was sixth (51) in the standings behind TC St. Francis (87), Harbor Springs (83.50), Boyne City (76), St. Ignace (57), and Bellaire (55.50). Ot

Lewis continued to shine, taking first in the discus (106?7?) and third place in the shot put (29?1 1/2?), while Kreft took a second in the 3200m run (12:36), and a sixth place in the 800m run (2:39).

IN THE BOYS? events, RC placed seventh with 30 points behind Harbor Springs (127), Gaylord St. Mary (74.50), East Jordan (66), St. Ignace (65), Charlevoix (64), and Traverse City (44). Others by rank were Elk Rapids, Boyne City, and Bellaire. Fleming tied for first in the high jump (5?9?) and fourth in the long jump (18?2 3/4?).

Greene took third place in the high jump (5?6?) and the shot put (45?1 1/2?), and fifth in the discus (119?11?). Smuda was fourth in the 3200m run (10:50). The Hurons will participate in the PI Championships hosted by Posen Wednesday, followed by the St. Ignace Invitational Saturday and the Rudyard Invitational Tuesday.
