Sewer system project underway as ground is broken

The sewer system project is officially a reality in Onaway as mayor Gary Wregglesworth broke ground last week.

After several long years of securing permits and funding, the city signed all the necessary paperwork to close on the $5.6 million USDA Rural Development grant/loan.

The funding will pay for the sewer treatment plant and the first phase of the collection system. The closing will initiate the release of funds for the project.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, city manager Joe Hefele called the day very important as the project now gets underway.

It is obviously an extremely big day in the history and the future of Onaway. It’s possibly the last day for peace and quiet in the town for four, or five years,” he said.

“This all started, and it was put to a vote by the citizens of Onaway. It was passed almost 4-to-1, 211 votes yeas and 59 votes no,” said Bernie Schmeltzer, city commissioner and former mayor.
