Honors roll in for Huron softball team

A fistful of honors came to members of the RCHS softball squad as the season closed. Rogers City also set several team records in the 28-7 season. Sophomore third baseman Ashley Fleming led the team in RBI with 38 while earning all-state honorable mention, as well as first team all-region, all-district, and first team in the Straits Area Conference.

She hit .425 with eight doubles, two triples, and four homers while scoring 34 runs in 106 at bats. Senior second baseman Megan Grulke made the first team all-region, all-conference and all-SAC. She played outstanding defensively (.969 fielding average) and hit .343 with 36 runs, three doubles, one home run, 21 walks and 16 RBI.

Senior righthander Rachel Brege made first team in the region, district and SAC in chalking up a 12-5 record. She struck out 67 and walked just five in 103 innings in compiling a 1.63 ERA. She set the record for fewest walks, shattering all-stater Mary Pietsch?s record of 19 in 141 innings in 2001. Brege walked just 19 batters in 178 innings over the past two seasons.

Renee Romel, the power-hitting shortstop, made the first team in the SAC and the district. She batted number three in the order and led the team with a .434 batting average. The senior had 16 doubles, three triples, a home run, and 25 RBI with 32 runs scored. Senior first baseman Theresa Bellmore, the clean-up hitter, had an outstanding season in winning all-district and all-SAC recognition. She hit .366 with 11 doubles, a triple, and three homers while driving in 30 runs and scoring 32.

unior outfielder Cassy Brege made the first team in district and second team in the conference while hitting at a .395 clip. She scored 25 runs while batting in 18 runs. Senior catcher Angie Asam made the first team for the district and second team in the conference in recognition of her .357 season. She scored 31 runs, walked 12 times and knocked in 15 runs.

Sophomore centerfielder Lindsey Fleming made the second team in the SAC. She hit .333 with 14 RBI and scored 20 runs. The team set a record for fewest walks allowed with just 39 free passes in 35 games. The former record was 52 in 33 games set last season.

Mike Grulke, Cindy Bellmore, Jim Connell, and Chelsea LaLonde assisted first-year softball coach Karl Grambau.
