Patty Pike elected president of RC School Board of Ed

After serving the Rogers City Area Schools Board of Education for two years as vice president, Patty Pike will get her turn as president as she was handed the gavel for the year which began Tuesday. The board conducted its annual organizational meeting at the Grambau Education Center.

Jo Bush-Glenn was elected vice president; Mike Marx, secretary; and Dana LaBar, treasurer. Pike replaces Scott McLennan as president, who, after a full term on the board, decided to not run again, so he could spend more time with his family. Keith Gordon also decided to not seek re-election, opening the door for two newcomers.

DICK HANSON and Robert (Greg) Frost were sworn into office at the beginning of the meeting by superintendent Ed Schultz. Election of officers provided little drama as each office had one nominee submitted before nominations were closed. Board member Norm Karbon nominated Pike for president, and the motion was seconded by Glenn.

?I?m honored that my fellow board members have the trust in my leadership skills,? Pike said following the meeting. ?Apparently they feel I?ll do a good job. I feel that I?m prepared for it.?

Pike said she wasn?t overly surprised she received the nomination but wouldn?t have been upset if someone else had been elected to the post.

BEFORE THE next meeting July 14, Pike will decide who will serve on the committees. Board members were asked to prov

ide their preferences in the next week and whether they want to chair a committee. She?ll then form the committees before presenting them at the next meeting. Along with the standing committees, the recently-formed ad hoc building and facilities committee will be carried over into the 2003-04 school year.

?My passion for the schools is to do the best we can for the students with the resources we have,? said Pike. ?We?ve got probably the best staff, teachers, administrators, serving our students, and that?s the best thing. It shows with the awards and the accreditation that we have accomplished over the years.?

It was decided that the regular monthly board meetings will continue to fall on the second Monday of the month, with all meetings beginning at 6:30 p.m.
