Seven to compete for title of Miss Rogers City

Seven RCHS seniors will compete in the Miss Rogers City Pageant July 25. Alison Schuiteman, Miss Rogers City 2002, will relinquish her crown to one of this year?s contestants at the high school. Under the direction of Pennie Kelly, the contestants continue the long tradition in the Nautical City by offering an evening of entertainment, which begins at 7 p.m. on July 25. Each contestant is 17 years old and will be a senior at RCHS this fall.

Contestant number one is Megan Marx, the daughter of Alison and Mike Marx. Sponsored by the Optimist Club, Zygorski-Micketti and Elite Salon, Marx attended Rogers City public schools throughout her educational career. She has been active in varsity softball, cheerleading, bowling, and Girl Scouts. She is vice-president of the RC Drama Club, is a member of the Natural Helpers, and sings in both the Voices in Harmony and the St. John Lutheran Church choir. She also plays in the high school band. Megan said she entered the Miss Rogers City pageant for the experience. ?I heard from past contestants that it was a lot of fun. I have been going to these pageants since I was a little girl and couldn?t wait to get on stage,? she said. Megan plans to attend Northern Michigan University to study to become a nurse or a teacher.

Katie Krueger, daughter of Eugene and Barbara Krueger, is contestant number two. She is sponsored by Krueger Seed Farms and Bayport Food Store. She attended Montessori school through kindergarten, and then attended St. Ignatius for eight years before entering RCHS. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Natural Helpers, Educational Talent Search, and the student council, in addition to serving in the Girl Scouts for six years. Katie said a reason for entering the pageant was to gain self-confidence. ?I entered the Nautical City Queen?s Pageant to gain self confidence, to be involved in the community, and to be myself and have fun,? she said. She plans to attend Michigan State University to pursue a career in law. She hopes to one day live in Boston, Massachusetts and eventually own a law firm.

Contestant number three is Heather LaLonde, the daughter of Ed and Bev LaLonde. She is sponsored by Curtis Professional Eyecare and Rogers City Home Furnishings. She attended RC public schools before entering high school. Heather is part of the Educational Talent Search, St. Ignatius Youth Group, and enjoys playing high school basketball, volleyball and softball. She had several reasons for entering the pageant. ?The experience, making new friends, and getting involved in the community,? were reasons she listed for entering. She plans to attend college to pursue a career as an elementary teacher.

Melissa Fuhrman, the daughter of Sue Fuhrman and Rhiny Schleben, is contestant number four. She is sponsored by Sunrise Garden and Grain and Rogers City Ace Hardware. She has attended RC public schools and has been a member of 4-H for 12 years. She is also a member of the Key Club, student council, student government, and her church?s youth group. Melissa said she has looked forward to entering the pageant for a long time. ?I have wanted to be in the pageant since I was a little girl and to try something new,? she said. She plans to attend Alpena Community College after graduating from high school to pursue a career as a registered nurse.

Contestant number five is Kari Rhode, the daughter of Dennis and Susan Rhode. Kari attended St. John Lutheran School through eighth grade. She is sponsored by the Gaslight Restaurant and Lounge, and Premiere Deli and Catering. Kari is involved in the Natural Helpers Program, the National Honor Society and the Educational Talent Search. She said entering the pageant was important for several reasons. ?I want to strengthen my self-confidence, make new friendships, and have an exciting summer,? she said. She plans to attend Northern Michigan University to earn a bachelor?s degree in Cytotechnology t

o aid in the research of a cure for cancer.

Christine Belusar, daughter of David and Carol Belusar, is contestant number six. She is sponsored by NAPA W and W Auto Parts. She attended St. John Lutheran School and was home-schooled through the Abecka home-school correspondence course. Christine is a member of the National Honor Society, Natural Helpers, TBL Mentoring, and the Chat Club. As a young girl, she remembers wanting to be in the pageant. ?I?ve wanted to run for Miss Rogers City since I was young. Now that I?m older I am in the pageant because it is a great opportunity to show my bright side,? she said.

Contestant number seven is Miranda Bredow, the daughter of Mary Krage and Jeff Bredow. She is sponsored by The Engine Shop, J&L Camera, Leslie Shoe Company, and Dr. Rhind at the RC Rehab Hospital. She has attended Rogers City public schools since first grade. Miranda is in the RC Drama Club, TBL Mentoring, Voices in Harmony, and has served on the student council. She has good reasons for entering the pageant. ?I entered for the fun and the challenging experience,? she said. Following graduation, she plans to attend Alpena Community College for two years, and then attend Western Michigan University to become a psychiatrist.
