Four PI townships join in fight to stem flow of drugs

Five Presque Isle County townships have made financial contributions this year to the Huron Undercover Narcotics Team. The four-county undercover drug investigative unit had fallen on hard times when neither Montmorency nor Alpena counties met their monetary commitments. What really hurt, according to Presque Isle prosecutor Don McLennan, is that recent years have shown increased abuse of hard drugs, including oxycodone and heroin.

?The drug team has made a Herculean effort to stem the flow of these drugs,? McLennan said, ?and the entire community of northeast Michigan has been the beneficiary of their efforts.? Recognizing the need to keep the drug team funded, area townships have been making donations to the effort.

In Presque Isle County, the townships of Krakow, Presque Isle, Ocqueoc, and Moltke have contributed sums ranging from $100 to $1,000. The City of Rogers City also significantly increased its contribution by providing an officer to the team this year.

In addition to addressing the illegal trafficking of narcotics, the HUNT team also lends assistance to local police agencies with intelligence and surveillance work.
