Hurons counting days until basketball opener

With less than one week to go before the homecourt opener against Boyne City next Tuesday, the Hurons continue to prepare for basketball action. Coach Karl Grambau is hoping it all comes together by next week. Starting for the Hurons will be junior center Ashley Fleming, along with her sister, junior guard Lindsay Fleming, and forward Becky Bruning. Who Grambau decides to put in the remaining slots is anyone?s guess. ?Megan Hanson will be doing a lot of the ball handling with stiff competition from Heather LaLonde, Jenna Vogelheim, and Jess Konieczny,? Grambau said. Grambau will have his choice between others on the team as well, with Kristy Curtis, CJ Calabrese, Samantha Hurst, Cassy Brege, and Sarah Dove to choose from.

Action will continue on homecourt when the Rudyard Bulldogs come to town Thursday, before the Hurons leave on the road for Onaway September 9. The Hurons will have until October 9 to refine their skills before they meet the St. Ignace Saints out of town. ?I think we?ll be battling it out, and we?re hoping to get a little closer this year to St. Ignace.?

The Hurons have only lost three games on home court in the past three years ? all to St. Ignace. The Boyne City opener should be an exciting game, as the Hurons have beat the Ramblers the past six times they?ve played each other.

The girls are hoping for a good turnout of fans for the opening game Tuesday, September 2 against the Ramblers.
