Paull, Schultz top runners in Nautical Run

The Nautical City Run for Health has grown in scope over the years, attracting area runners as well as out-of-state visitors. This year the 6K (3.72 miles) had 104 participants included youngsters as well. There also were 75 participants in the one-mile fun event which included walkers as well as runners.

THIS YEAR was no surprise in the male division as veteran runner Denny Paull did it again in 19:23, just five seconds in front of Lyle Schultz, 21, of Alpena. Paull, 39, of Cheboygan was in a hot pursuit race with Schultz the whole way. Paull admitted it does get harder the older he gets. ?Lyle pulled me the whole way ? I watched the Tour de France this year ? and I just followed his draft,? Paull said after the race. ?He (Lyle) was definitely the stronger man out there today…but I got him in the kick. It was his race.? The runners were faced with thick humid air and warm conditions but all gave it their best.

IN THE FEMALE division local favorite Lauren Fairbanks gave way to a new champion when Kylie Schultz, 24, of Port Collins, Colorado decided to run the event while visiting her father, Ed Schultz, Rogers City superintendent of schools. Kylie was the first female runner in at 23:55. Kylie was an All-State runner at Clare High School and went on to run at Western Michigan University.

?I just finished running a marathon,? Kylie said following her first place finish Saturday. ?I thought I wouldn?t be able to win it, because I?m slow now. (The training for a marathon requires a different type of training and tactics). ?My dad told me who the competition was going to be, so I found her and ran right next to her for the first one and a half miles and then I went out front to see how she would react to it. It paid off,? she added.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS of the event that utilizes the Huron Sunrise Trail for a majority of the course were male second place Schultz (19:28), and David Partyka, 21, of Rogers City (20:15) third place.
