Posen girls basketball team has more depth than last season

The Posen girls? basketball team opens its 20-game season with more players than a year ago. Second year coach Tom Schellie reported a full squad of 10 players practiced on the varsity the last week-and-a-half. That is a far cry from what the 2002 team had. Oftentimes, on the Posen bench, it was coach Schellie with only one or two players sitting beside him to rotate into games with the five players on the floor.

IT WAS A tough situation, and one that played into the hands of the opponent. Schellie?s Vikings were competitive and kept the games extremely close through three quarters, but understandably, as the fourth quarter rolled around, Posen?s six or seven players simply ran out of gas. The good news: They still managed six wins, but more importantly, there is a core of players on this year?s squad with lots of experience. There aren?t too many teams who can match the minutes spent on the court that six returning players recorded a year ago. The experience, and now the added depth, should mean trouble for others.

IT?S WHY Posen should challenge for the North Star League and a district tournament trophy. ?I think we?ll be a team to watch,? said Schellie. The watch begins on Tuesday, the first day of school for students, with a road contest at De Tour. It?s one of the longest trips on the schedule, but at least they can get it behind them in the first game.

Each scheduled date begins with the junior varsity taking the floor at 6 p.m. Look for more details on the varsity in the annual fall high school sports tab August 28.
