Viking golf team gets into action

Under the heat of the summer sun, a young Viking golf team got into 2003 season into full swing at the Hillman Invitational last Friday with a ninth place finish. It was the start of a new year, with the program?s third coach in three years: Melanie Kaszubowski, who didn?t want to see the 2003 year, as short as it is, canceled.

Sally Goupell, the 2002 coach, put out a notice at the all-sports banquet in June that if a coach wasn?t found, there would be no golf in the fall. Kaszubowski didn?t want to see that happen, especially since the Posen golfers, including her son Dave Karschnick III, didn?t want to miss a year. It?s a young group with three seniors, one junior, four sophomores and one freshman, who will be gaining experience as the year progresses.

Kaszubowski said two of the seniors were still on vacation and weren?t available for Friday?s meet. Junior Nick Goupell had the lowest of the four scores that counted with a 99. Karschnick and Dillon Wirgau, two of the sophomores, each shot 117, while senior Rick Krajniak posted a 125. Newcomer Jon Konwinski had a 145 in his first outing for the red and white.

Rudyard led the field with a team score of 343, followed by Tawas and Mio. Ten teams participated. Posen?s next scheduled action is Monday at Fairview Hills in Mio.
