Vikings sweep DeTour in first basketball games

It was an opening night sweep for the Posen Viking girls? basketball teams who traveled to De Tour Tuesday. The varsity won its game 51-39, after the junior varsity bounced the De Tour JV, 31-12, making the trip to the far corner of the eastern upper peninsula worthwhile.M The varsity had a slow start in the first quarter, but after shaking some first-game jitters, the Vikes erased an early De Tour lead and never let the home club climb back into the game.

Freshman Mary Calhoun in her first high school basketball game almost scored a triple double. She led all scorers with 18 points, collected 10 rebounds, and had six steals. For the JV, all 12 players on the roster got a lot of playing time and some tough team defense didn?t let De Tour get anything going, and it didn?t seem to matter who was in the game.

THE VARSITY and junior varsity will take their 1-0 records to Fairview tonight (Thursday). Their first home game is Tuesday against Hale. It could have been the bus trip or a case of the nerves, but coach Tom Schellie said his varsity squad came out ?ice cold.?

De Tour played more aggressively in the opening eight minutes of the season and took a 14-8 lead over Posen into the second quarter. ?In the second quarter, we rebounded a little bit better and we were up,? said Schellie. The halftime lead for the Vikings was 23-20. After the halftime break, Schellie said everybody seemed to settle down and execute. ?We used a different half-court trap and got some quick steals and fast break points off of that,? s

aid Schellie. Posen stepped up the defense in the fourth quarter and made free throws to put win number one in the books.

?WE ACTUALLY went to a two-three zone the last three minutes of the game and that really seemed to fluster De Tour,? said Schellie. Last year?s team MVP, senior Shannon Ciarkowski, finished with 16 points in the game. As a team the Vikings had 20 steals, but the turnovers were high, according to the coach. JV coach Mandee Hincka was extremely pleased with her team?s effort. Whether it was the first or second string on the court, the Vikes pressed well, and took De Tour right out of the game.

Jenny Ciarkowski was the leading scorer, with more points that De Tour put up on its side of the scoreboard. She had 13. Roxann Hincka was next with nine. Four players scored two points each. The JV starts the action today at 6 p.m.
