Huron basketball team suffers fifth loss of season

The RCHS girls basketball team has struggled all season, and the final result Tuesday night was 51-47 in favor of the Rudyard Bulldogs, leaving the overall record at 1-5 overall and 1-2 in conference. The Hurons began with a small deficit after the first quarter, 16-12, and the Bulldogs stretched the lead to 33-20 by the halftime break.

The Hurons made a comeback in the third segment and outscored the host team 13-11 and again in the final quarter 14-7, but just could not overcome the gap. ?We cut their lead to only three at one point in the final quarter,? said coach Karl Grambau. ?It was good to see we had better scoring with other girls besides Ashley this time. Lindsey Fleming had her very best game ever.?

Ashley scored a game-high 23 points, and her sister Lindsey added 12 with two of those being three-pointers. Sara Dove contributed eight points. ?We were 13 for 27 attempts at the free throw line,? Grambau said. ?The Bulldogs were 10 for 17.? In the JV game, the Bulldogs also came away with a victory over the Hurons 46-34.

The Hurons were down 24-8 at the half and made a great effort to overcome the gap. High for the JV team were Tiffiny Krueger with 14 points and Laura Konieczny with 10.

LAST WEEK the Hurons traveled to Alcona and lost to the Tigers, 52-35. The Hurons came out of the gate in the first quarter down only a few points, 15-11, but the Tigers stretched their lead to 29-15 after the Hurons posted only four points in the second quarter. There was no comeback in the third when Alcona continued strong, bringing th

e tally to 39-20. The final segment brought a fighting spirit from the Hurons as they outscored the Tigers 15-13, but it was too little, too late.

High for the Rogers City team was Ashley Fleming with 22 points. In the JV game, the Hurons also were bit by the Tigers, 42-33. Outscored in the first half 25-5, the Hurons made a major comeback in the third and fourth quarters, outscoring the Tigers 13-12 and 15-5, but again, like their varsity sisters, the deficit was too great to overcome.

?We cut their lead to six late in the fourth quarter, but fell short,? said coach Jason Wenzel. ?We missed 25 free throws.?

High for the Hurons were Krueger with 11 points and Jenny Smith with 10. The Hurons travel to Boyne City Thursday and host Newberry Tuesday at 6 p.m.
