Posen basketball team makes it four in a row

The Posen girls? basketball team (6-2, 5-1) gave visiting Hale fits in earning its fourth win in a row. The Vikings blasted the Eagles 64-39 Tuesday and upended Au Gres last Thursday 49-38. Senior Michelle Bednarski had a game-high 18 points against Hale and has netted 34 points in her last two games. She also provided 14 rebounds for Posen.

Late in the first quarter Hale took a one point lead, 10-9, but went on a scoring drought for nearly eight minutes, and was down 20-12 with 1:20 left before the end of the half. The defensive pressure proved to be too much for Hale.

?WE FLUSTERED them,? said coach Tom Schellie. The defense did it by getting in the passing lanes, putting pressure on the guards, and outrebounding the Eagles. On offense, Posen was solid, playing well as a unit, making good passes, and hitting the shots. The halftime score was 27-15, but the Vikings put the game away with an 8-0 run late in the third quarter and in the early minutes of the fourth. Hale hit a three-pointer with 5:40 left to end another mini drought against the stingy red and white defenders. The score at that point was 51-27. A nice cushion gives everyone a chance to get in the act and Schellie likes the way everyone is playing.

?THE BENCH has been playing good and they are working hard,? said Schellie. Posen flirted with a 30-point margin with about two minutes left in the final quarter and was up 62-33, before Hale went on a 6-2 mini streak. The next challenge will be against Hillman on the road tonight. The Tigers had an open night and were in attendance at Tuesday?s game, scouting the Vikings. PHS will hope to turn around its luck against Cedarville at home Tuesday.

Three players were in double figures against Hale. Senior Shannon Ciarkowski had 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Freshman Roxann Hincka had 10 points

and nine rebounds, while junior Katie Lewandowski chipped in nine. Junior Megan Latz had five rebounds. Ciarkowski scored 14 against Au Gres, while Mary Calhoun had seven.

POSEN GIRLS? BASKETBALL squads earned four wins against no defeats over the last week, and the junior varsity improved its record to 7-1. They are 6-0 in the NSL race. The only JV loss of the season was against Cedarville, with the rematch on Tuesday. Brittany Styma and Jill Krajniak both had a dozen in a 41-29 victory against Hale. The JV raced to a 20-8 halftime lead against Au Gres and went on to win 42-25. They also have won four in a row.

Amanda Pieczynski had 10 points against Au Gres and was followed by Jenny Ciarkowski (9) and Styma (8).
