Posen looks to keep pace in the league race with a win tonight at Au Gres

The Viking girls? basketball team turned in its best performance of the season in a 55-32 whipping of De Tour Tuesday, said a complimentary coach Tom Schellie. ?We did a great job boxing out, we did a great job pushing the ball up the floor,? said Schellie. Schellie also was pleased with the way the girls passed the ball and played unselfishly. ?We have improved from our first game and that shows,? said Schellie of his charges, who defeated De Tour (2-6) in their first matchup by 12 points. Posen was sparked Tuesday by a 15-0 run heading into halftime. De Tour scored the first bucket of the second quarter to take a 10-9 lead, but the Vikes stepped up the defense and posted a shutout until the break. Katie Lewandowski had six steals in the first half and fueled the impressive run, and as a team, the red and white had 49 rebounds and 20 steals.

SCHELLIE BELIEVES the Vikings, after winning their last two games to improve to 4-2, are back in the North Star League race, but they?ll need a win at Au Gres tonight (Thursday) to keep pace. ?They are a good team,? said Schellie. ?We have to be ready to play. It?s a road game, it?s a long trip. We have to get off the bus and be ready to play, because we are in the race for the championship right now. ?We only have one loss to Mio and they are undefeated in the league right now, so I think we are in it. We just have to keep working hard.? The Vikings won their first two, dropped the next two to Mio and Cedarville, and now have started another two-game winning streak after they defeated Atlanta 58-50 last Thursday at home. Following the Au Gres game today, the Vikes will play a make-up home game Tuesday against Hale which was canceled a couple of weeks ago.

IN THE CLOSING minute of the first quarter, Shannon Ciarkowski drained a three pointer from the left wing, to give Posen a 9-8 lead, but the Raiders answered early in the second quarter, before going ?o-fer? the rest of the quarter. The number ?10? was on the visitors? side of the scoreboard for almost eight minutes of playing time, extending into the third quarter. Lewandowski got things going on the 15-0 run with a steal and a field goal to take the lead for good. She provided another highlight when she went end-to-end with a layup to pad the lead at six, 16-10. Kendra Krajniak and Megan Latz were also involved in the scoring run. The score at the end of the third quarter was 36-21, after the Vikes went on a mini, 6-2 run. ?Everybody played today, and everybody got into the game, and ever

ybody was rested,? said Schellie. ?We played really good defense, too.?

CIARKOWSKI HAD a game-high 17 points. She also had seven rebounds, four steals and four assists. Lewandowski had 12 points, while Latz had 12 boards. Michelle Bednarski had seven rebounds and six steals. The De Tour contest also marked the first varsity game for freshman Roxann Hincka, who was called up from the JV and had three blocks. She will provide some added size for Posen down low. In the win over Atlanta, Ciarkowski scored nine fields goals enroute to finishing with 21 points, while Bednarski and Lewandowski both tossed in a dozen.

THE POSEN JUNIOR VARSITY was victorious in both of the games played over the last week. They defeated De Tour 35-20, while derailing Atlanta 62-8. Jenny Ciarkowski was the leading scorer in both games with seven against the Raiders and a dozen against the Huskies. Kim Wekwert had seven against De Tour, while Michelle Mulka and Roxann Hincka both had seven against Atlanta.
