Tawas defeats Hurons; Alcona up next

The Hurons came close but didn?t pull off a win against the now 5-0, Class B Tawas Braves who remained perfect after last Thursday?s game against Rogers City. Coach Karl Grambau knew it would be a hard-fought game, and was pleasantly surprised and happy with the Huron girls? efforts. They never gave up and kept chipping away at the deficit, coming very close at times during the 48-41 loss.

?It was the best game we?ve played,? Grambau said. ?In the third quarter we had the opportunities…but the ball just didn?t fall.? In the first quarter, the Tawas team outscored the Hurons 13-9, leaving the host Hurons playing a ?catch-up? game by the half with a 29-21 deficit. The Hurons just could not score well in the third quarter and the Braves went into the final segment after taking a 12-2 edge in the third.

The Hurons fought back in the fourth and outscored the Braves 18-7 to cut the lead to only seven. Ashley Fleming scored 18 of her 25 game-high points in the first half, while Kristy Curtis added two three pointers and Heather LaLonde sank a trey shot. Lindsey Fleming added four points.

High for the Braves were Erin Kolnitys with 21 points and Desi Decker with 13. ?We had nine turnovers in the first quarter and 20 for the entire game,? Grambau said. ?Although our free throws were only 6 for 11, the Tawas team was only 2 for 13 at the line. They are an excellent team and our girls really hustled in the attempt.?

THE HURON JV team snared its first win of the season against Tawas 37-34, bringing the record to 1-2. The Hurons will travel to Alcona Thursday (tonight) and face the Rudyard Bulldogs in an away game Tuesday.
