Vikings look to improve record with a pair of home games

Posen players and fans hope the next two home basketball games go a lot better than the last two. The Vikings let a second quarter, 10-point lead get away from them against Mio and struggled at Cedarville on Tuesday. Their record evened out at 2-2. Coach Tom Schellie wants his players to regroup and ?get back to playing fundamentally sound basketball? when they host Atlanta tonight and De Tour, which they defeated in their first game, on Tuesday. Posen lost to Cedarville, 74-42 at Cedarville and to Mio at home, 57-40.

SCHELLIE SAID the Vikings couldn?t contend with Cedarville?s quickness and press. The Vikes were getting trapped on the sideline, turning the ball over, and giving up transition points. ?We played terrible,? said Schellie. ?We didn?t rebound or box out very well.? Posen was down 21-7 after the first quarter, and trailed by 15 at halftime.

The Trojans pulled further away in the third quarter, and led 56-24 going into the final eight minutes. Senior Shannon Ciarkowski had a team-high 12 points, while senior Michelle Bednarski and junior Katie Lewandowski both scored seven each.

AFTER THE VIKES led by 10 early in the second quarter, Mio turned the game around, and took a one point lead into the break. ?We played a great first half,? said Schellie, but a bad third quarter, when the T-Bolts outscored the home s

quad 24-6.

Ciarkowski finished with 18, followed by freshman Mary Calhoun with nine and Bednarski with seven. The Posen junior varsity lost its first game of the season, 49-42, and takes a 3-1 record into games against Atlanta and De Tour.

THE JV?s ALSO had a difficult time with Cedarville?s speed and had trouble getting back on defense. They were down by 12 in the first quarter, switched to man-to-man and took a two point lead, but let the game slip away in the second half. Roxann Hincka finished with 13, while Jenny Ciarkowski had seven. The girls pulled out an overtime thriller, 37-36, last Thursday.

Hincka scored a field goal with a minute left in regulation to tie the game and send it into overtime. Brittany Romel scored the first points in the extra session and coach Mandee Hincka was confident that they would never look back from there, and she was right. Amanda Pieczynski had a team-high 11 points. Jenny Ciarkowski had 10.
