Ashley Fleming breaks career scoring record at RCHS

Ashley Fleming put her name in the record books in the Hurons? 55-20 win over Onaway Tuesday. The junior center broke the 22-year-old record of Kathy Furtaw when she laid in her 34th point of the night with 2:30 left in the third quarter. Furtaw, who graduated in 1982, was in attendance to witness the record. The bucket gave Fleming 968 on her career, breaking Furtaw?s record of 967. Earlier in the season Fleming passed Emily McLean (934), Tootie Wickersham (847), Karla Fairbanks (836), and Crystal Idalski (753).

The daughter of Neil and Jeanette Fleming who is a teammate of her twin sister Lindsey, hit her 34th with textbook footwork amid series of short bank-shots and layups.

AFTER THE game, she gave credit to her teammates and coaches for contributing to her success. ?I had the easy work, just throw the ball in the basket. My teammates worked really hard. That?s what helped me to get the record,? she said.

?Thanks to the coaches and everyone else who helped to get me to where I am now.? She gave credit to her current coach Karl Grambau, former assistant Mike Grulke, and junior varsity coach Jason Wenzel as well as present and former teammates for helping her with her game.

THE POINTS CAME in typical Ashley fashion. With her teammates constantly making great passes inside, Ashley had nine points before the Cardinals scored any. She took a pass from Megan Hanson, turned around and laid a banker off the backboard at the 2:52 mark of the first quarter, giving the Hurons a 12-0 lead. An inlet pass from Jess Konieczny assisted on the final two of her 13 points in the first quarter, as the Hurons led 18-3.

She scored all 10 of the Hurons? points in the second quarter, taking passes from her sister Lindsey, Becky Bruning, and Hanson for five more inside shots. Rogers City led 28-5 at halftime. Now just 10 away from tying the record, she quickly went to work. After Lindsey hit a three-pointer to make the score 31-7 with 7:32 left in the third quarter, Ashley hit a banker at 6:40, a layup at 5:30, and hit one of two free throws at 4:23 for her 28th point of the night. She snatched a rebound and hit the follow-up for point 30 with 3:53 left, and grabbed another offensive rebound and nailed the followup for point 32 with 2:50 left in the third quarter.

Next time down the court, she hit a short jumper from the right of the basket and Grambau called timeout to acknowledge her accomplishment and take her out of the game.

?I?M REALLY proud of her. She is only a junior and has a lot of games coming yet. With Kathy Furtaw coming over here today it made the night really special because Kathy was a great player in Rogers City history,? Grambau said. ?Ashley is a great student athlete. She is a great student and good worker at any sport she does. She is all-state caliber in any sport she does because she puts in the extra effort.?
