Beware of ghosts on Halloween night

Hush, hush, for it is Halloween. Best be quiet, and not seen. Round-eyed owls, perched on a limb, flighting goblins, one, two three. Hush, hush. While your trick-or-treaters are making their rounds tonight, Onaway Police Chief Jim Gibson has some tips to help keep them safe:

CHILDREN should stay on sidewalks while trick-or-treating, and remember to carry a flashlight. Cross streets only at corners, and remember to look both ways before crossing. Don?t trick-or-treat alone, and plan your route ahead of time with an adult. Wear light colored or reflective clothing so your visible in the dark. Never enter a stranger?s house for candy. Stay away from open flames and candles, like those in Jack-o-lanterns. Be careful around animals who may be frightened by your unfamiliar costume. Have an adult inspect your candy before eating it.

A PARENT or adult should always accompany young children trick-or-treating. Older children should have a curfew and stick to a pre-planned route. Adults should inspect all treats before they are eaten, looking for torn wrappers or signs of tampering. Make sure your children know how to reach you, and you know where they will be.

Remove tripping hazards from in front of your home, and consider using battery-powered pumpkins instead of candles. Keep pets out of the way of trick-or-treaters, they may be frightened by strange appearances. As an added precaution Gibson said, ?There will be an Onaway policeman and firefighters at the VFW hall from 5 to 7 p.m. to inspect candy and other treats.?
