Hurons win homecoming shootout with Rudyard

A late third quarter touchdown and a key defensive stand helped power the Hurons to a 30-22 win over the Rudyard Bulldogs Friday (10/3) at Gilpin Field.

The homecoming night win evened the Hurons’ record at 3-3.

The winning scores came at the end of a four-minute, 64-yard drive which ended with a 14 yard TD pass from Tim Cercone to Cody Wenzel. Facing a third and goal from the 14, after a holding penalty, Cercone shook off a heavy Bulldog rush and found Wenzel in the left corner of the endzone. Justin Kelly ran in the conversion for what would be the winning margin, giving the Hurons a 24-16 lead.

Rudyard came back to mount a long drive of its own to start the fourth quarter. Powered mostly by a straight-ahead attack, Rudyard marched 67 yards in 12 plays, converting three fourth down tries.

The defensive play of the game turned out to be a defensive stop of the PAT attempt by Judd Vekaryacz and Scott Heinzel at the goal line, after the Bulldogs scored with 6:59 left in the game.

Rogers City got the last score after Rudyard surrendered the ball on downs deep in their own end.

More details will be posted here later in the week.
