Graduation requirements may change for OHS students

In a memo to the Onaway Area Community Schools Board of Education, high school principal Matt Lukshaitis recommended changes for graduation requirements of high school students in the year 2005. According to Lukshaitis?s recommendations, the class of 2005 would need a minimum of 28 credits. As it stands now, to graduate from OHS, a student must have a minimum of 25 credits.

Changes Lu

kshaitis is recommending, are dropping current studies, and civics, in social studies, replacing those with political science: dropping mathematics to two credits instead of the current three; physical education from a half credit to a full credit, and increasing elective credits from nine-and-a-half credits to 14 credits. According to Lukshaitis, these changes will give struggling students a better chance to complete requirements in a timely manner so they are able to graduate with their class. Additionally, due to cutbacks, there is not the staff available to teach the requirements that were expected in the past.

The policy, curriculum and personal committee is recommending the board accept Lukshaitis?s policy 7630-graduation requirements for its first reading. Policy changes like this are required to be read twice by the board.
