Wright pleads guilty: could get one year for explosives charge

Marlan G. Wright, 41, of Onaway pleaded guilty Monday in Presque Isle County Circuit Court to one charge of placing explosives with intent to frighten.

As part of a plea agreement, Wright pled guilty to one charge, and two charges will be dismissed. Jail time will be capped at one year.

The charges against Wright came from a series of three incidents in which incendiary devices were found in Onaway, August 22, September 4, and September 15.

Police acted on a tip, and obtained a search warrant for Wright?s residence. evidence allegedly connecting him to the devices was found.

Wright entered a guilty plea to the charges at his arraignment in circuit court in October, but it was not accepted because he was unable to say that he pl

aced the devices for the purpose of scaring anyone.

On Monday, Wright testified that he had placed an explosive device in Onaway August 22, not intending to hurt anyone, but to scare anyone who came across it.

The device was a mixture of fuel, oil, and possibly kerosene with a wick made of a rag or cloth, which was enclosed in a coffee can. This device was found on Shaw Street, near South Seventh Street.

Sentencing for Wright is scheduled December 22. Presque Isle County Prosecutor Donald McLennan will recommend residential alcohol rehabilitation in addition to the one year in jail, if the plea is not withdrawn.

Placing explosives with intent to frighten is a felony, and is punishable by up to five years in prison and/or up to a $3,000 fine
