Field wakes from a coma; early medical reports are encouraging

The condition of attorney Don Field is improving at St. Mary?s Medical Center in Saginaw. The District 5 commissioner, who was seriously injured in a two-vehicle accident in Iosco County December 3, is out of a coma and trying to talk to family members. Early medical reports have also brought encouraging news for the Presque Isle Township resident. Field had been drifting in and out of a drug-induced coma the middle of last week, but slowly has been coming out of it.

HIS WIFE Mary Field said Tuesday there is no spinal damage and an MRI test turned up ?good news? as well. ?I went in right after I found out the results of the MRI,? Field said, ?and he opened up his eyes and was pretty clear. He looked sad and I said, ?I just want a smile out of you. I just want one smile, that?s all I want.?? Mary said Don put his teeth together, lifted his lips, and did as she requested, even with a tracheotomy tube in his mouth.

Field has two broken legs and is fitted with a neck brace but it is hoped he can walk again, Mary said. The brace will be removed when weak neck muscles mend. Don, when told this, said, ?Okay? and ?I love you, Mary.? On the day Don started to become responsive, four of his doctors stopped in to check his condition. Mary told them ?This man is going to shock…you.? The response two of the doctors gave was: ?He already did.?

MARY ENCOURAGED family and friends to still pray for continued improvement because ?He?s not out of the woods yet.? Don still is fighting a high fever, which is starting to show some signs of improvement. His condition was still listed as critical Tuesday. Field was returning home from Bay City in his 1998 GMC Yukon when his vehicle crossed the centerline and collided with a southbound Jefferson Trucking tractor loaded with Gypsum board. The crash remains under investigation by state police.
