Five wrestlers win all their matches at Roscomm

The Rogers City Huron wrestling team opened its 2003-04 season Saturday at the Roscommon duals. The Hurons went 3-2 on the day to earn third place. Rogers City first defeated Houghton Lake, 43-25, but then lost to Grayling (41-30) and Roscommon (42-41). The Hurons came back to win their final two matches over Saginaw Nouvel (57-18) and Manton (52-30). Roscommon was the eventual tournament winner. The competition doesn?t get any easier as Rogers City travels to Grayling today, taking on the host school and Petoskey. Saturday is the St. Ignace Invitational.

Dylan Centala, ranked number one in the state at his weight class, won all five of his matches with pins at Roscommon. He wrestled at 125 and 130 pounds. The other top-ranked Huron wrestler, heavyweight Josh Christ, went 5-0 with four pins and one void. Brian Krueger (103 pounds), Justin Kelley (135 pounds), and Chris Rhode (189 pounds) also forged a 5-0 mark.

Krueger had three pins and two voids, while Rhode and Kelley appeared to be primed for a return trip to The Palace of Auburn Hills with five wins each. Centala, Rhode, and Kelley were Rogers City?s individual state qualifiers last season. Brent Freel (112 pounds) and Cody Wenzel (140/145 pounds) were 4-1 Saturday. At 215 pounds, Tyler Gorlewski was 3-2.

The rest of the records from Saturday include: Mike Mierzwinski (119 pounds, 1-4); Austin Fairbanks (140/145 pounds, 2-3); Tyler Schuiteman (152 pounds, 2-3); Trent Holmes (160 pounds, 0-5); and Mark Grulke (171 pounds, 0-3).
