FLASHBACKS: RCHS students further school expansion with penny drive

Students from St. Ignatius School and St. John School enjoyed a performance of ?Lighten Up! With Thomas Edison.? The live theater presentation depicting the life of Edison was co-sponsored by the parent-teacher organizations of the two schools.

The Rogers City Educators Association prepared two proposals to settle a pair of grievances which had been the topic of much discussion — at school board meetings and around the community — since they were filed in early September. An RCEA spokesperson said money was not the issue; instead the union was seeking ?to uphold contract language at minimal additional cost to the district.?

An estimated 214,000 white-tailed deer were harvested in Michigan by firearm hunters during the November 15-30 season, ranking this year?s harvest the seventh best in history and comparable to the 1986 firearm deer season. It also was the safest season ever, according to the DNR.

Rogers City Kiwanis Club members treated patients at Rogers City Hospital?s extended care unit to a venison dinner with approximately 15-20 patients enjoying the meat, complete with trimmings, beer and a film. The club had been staging the venison dinner at extended care unit for several years.

Steve Schroeder, Rogers City?s 138-pound grappler, was named wrestler of the week following impressive performances both in a Huron dual meet victory over Boyne City and in the Sault Ste. Marie tournament. Schroeder pinned his Boyne City opponent in 3:41 and finished third in the Soo tourney.

Posen?s varsity girls basketball team forged its way into the regional finals with an exciting 47-46 victory over Central Lake but the Vikings were no match for powerful Maple City Glenn Lake, which captured the regional championship with a 69-47 victory. Behind the scoring of Renee Muszynski and Linda Kowalski, Posen led Central Lake by as much as seven points before withstanding a late surge to capture the one-point win.

The students of Rogers City High School, in an effort to

help the school expansion program, started a penny collection about six weeks ago. The recent count netted 14,504 pennies, or $145.04. The Latin Club-sponsored dance brought in $10.22 and the tenth grade homeroom collection totaled $10.92.

Michigan hunters cropped an estimated 70,000 deer from the state?s herd during recently-ended seasons. The northern lower peninsula buck kill was somewhat higher than game men had expected; last year 31,000 legal bucks were taken in the region during the regular season.

A memorial of $12 was made to the Rogers City Hospital in memory of Reuben Florip by the Class of 1951.

Mel?s Market and Vogler?s Market were selling two pounds of hamburger for 25 cents during their ?Old Fashioned Specials.? An 11-ounce jar of peanut butter cost 19 cent, while a dozen of California navels oranges were going for 25 cents
