Good grades for county jail

The Presque Isle County jail received a clean bill of health after an inspection, by the County Jail Services Unit (CJSU), Michigan Department of Corrections. ?Everything went very well on it,? said sheriff Terry Flewelling. ?We run a clean jail.? Flewelling said the facility passed with ?flying colors,? which he attributed to the employees of the jail. COUNTY JAILS are inspected on an annual basis by different members of CJSU.

A final jail inspection was mailed by CJSU November 6, which congratulated staff, as well as the Presque Isle County Board of Commissioners ?for maintaining compliance with the Administrative Rules for Jails and Lockups.? During the inspection, everything is looked at, Flewelling said, including the records of what is fed inmates when they are housed in the jail. An objective of the inspection is to provide documentation for follow-up, and to resolve any areas of noncompliance, ?but we really didn?t have much,? Flewelling added.

?WE APPRECIATE the successful results of your efforts,? stated Jack Kann, CJSU manager. The Presque Isle County jail was constructed in 1974 with a capacity of 18 beds. In 1988, a room was converted to a housing unit for low security inmates, increasing capacity of the jail to 20 beds. Four years later, three additional beds were added. The inspection was conducted by Dennis Streenrod, Correctional Facility Specialist, CJSU. The exit conference was conducted with undersheriff Bob Paschke.
