Huron basketball off until holiday tourney

The Huron basketball team has a long break before getting back to action in a four-team tournament at Cheboygan High School after Christmas. The varsity Hurons will take on Boyne City at 7:45 p.m. December 29 while the junior varsity plays the Rambler JV at 3:45 p.m.

Cheboygan plays St. Ignace JV at 2 p.m. with the varsity teams from both schools squaring off at 6 p.m. The winners of the JV game play December 30 at 3:45 p.m. with the consolation game starting at 2 p.m. The varsity consolation game is set for 6 p.m. with the championship immediately following. With Tuesday?s game in Alcona postponed until February, the only action of the week came in Rudyard last Friday.

A cold-shooting spell cost the Hurons a chance to steal a win away from the Bulldogs, as Rudyard prevailed, 53-50. After taking a 19-19 tie into the second quarter, Rudyard led 32-28 at halftime. Despite shooting only two-of-11 from the field in the third quarter, the Hurons cut the lead to 43-41 at the end of the third quarter.

Trailing by six points with 44 seconds left in the game, the Hurons were able to cut the margin to one with only 18 ticks left on the clock. But that was as close as the game would get, and the Hurons fell to 1-1. Kyle Greene led a balanced scoring attack with 14 points while Tim Cercone had 13 and Isaac Momrik added 12. Greene had 12 rebounds, three blocked shots, and four steals on the day. Clay Hilla had eight rebounds while Adam LaLonde added six. Jason Salo had 23 points for Rudyard while Bobby Loaff added 16.

Rogers City was 19-of-52 from the field and just 4-of-15 from beyond the three-point arc.
