Huron girls basketball team posts impressive stats

It was a Fleming season as far as the statistics went. Two sisters, Ashley and Lindsey Fleming led the team, Ashley posting high in scoring, rebounding, steals, and blocks, and Lindsey leading in assists.

?We won only seven games after winning 56 over the last three seasons?but we did play a very tough schedule,? said Huron coach Karl Grambau.

?With many key players returning next year, things look great for the team. We will work hard this summer to prepare for next season,? Grambau promised.

Although the conference wins/losses stood at 4-4, the Hurons made a good showing at the district finals overpowering Onaway in the first game, 54-31. They were eliminated by Inland Lakes 42-38 in the semifinals in a very close game.

THE SEASON netted Ashley a spot on the Straits Area Conference all-conference first team and Lindsey a slot on the second all-conference team while Megan Hanson earned honorable mention.

Ashley burned up school records in the points department, flashing past even the boys? school record, and posted 1,241 total points for 67 games played in her three year basketball career.

That?s 18.52 points per game, but Ashley has her senior year yet to play and is expected to up those numbers significantly.

Sister Lindsey is breaking a few records of her own in the three-points category, chalking up 26 of them in the 2003 season. That puts her fourth on the list for the school record of 48 three pointers in 1994 held by Heather Bruder.

?Lindsey just improves each year,? Gambau said. ?She has a very good chance to set a school record next year.?

The all time career school record for three-pointers is held by Emily McLean with 111. Emily scored 29 three pointers in 2001, and 41 in her senior year.

WHEN IT comes to the two point field goals, Ashley tops the list. In her freshman year Ashley scored 126 two-point baskets, upping the number in her sophomore year to 184 and to 220 in her 2003 junior year.

Ashley has held the school record since 2002 and will probably set a new one as a senior.

This year Ashley averaged 23.63 points per game and scored 520 points altogether in 2003. That includes her free throws, which added 80 more points.

Historically, Vicki Buczkowski held the points per game in a season record since 1985 when she had a total of 388 points, or 17.6 points per 22-game average.

The gals in the 1980s were quite the players as Claire Smart (1980) was second with 356 points, followed by Theresa Hudak (1982) with 382; Kathy Furtaw (1981) with 353; and Colleen Rohrer (1984) with 340.

Not until 2002 and Ashley Fleming coming around did those school records get surpassed. It is noteworthy that Ashley did that in her sophomore year, again in her junior year, and is fully expected to do so again next year as a senior.

THE HURONS scored a total of 927 points for the season, and Ashley accounted for 520 of them while sister Lindsey made another 120.

That is not to say the Flemings did not have help from their teammates. Becky Bruning added 52 points for the season, while Sara Dove added 46, Hanson had 43 points, and Konieczny and Jenna Vogelheim had 41 each.

Ashley makes her free throws 56 percent of the time, a percentage matched by teammate Dove, who made 14 out of 25 attempts.

Holding the record this year for free throws is Jess Konieczny, who attempted 28 free throws during the season and made 19, or 67 perc

ent of them.

The record holder for season free throws was Amy Percy in 1992 when she made 52 out of the 64 attempted freebies for an astounding 81 percent record.

Second on that list is last year?s senior Megan Grulke who made 34 out of 47 attempts for a 72 percent record.

According to Grambau?s history of stats, the best team free throws occurred in 1993 and 1997 when the teams could be counted on 58 percent of the time at the freebie line.

?We look forward to competing for the district championship next year with the returning players we have,? Grambau said. ?That is a very realistic goal.?
