RC Volleyball suffers home court opener loss
It?s the beginning of the volleyball season and the Rogers City Hurons are still in the opening-day-jitters mode, deciding who will play what position and in what sequence. The young team struggled against a powerful Alpena team Monday night for its home court debut. Although the Hurons began the first game with a five-point lead, that was all they posted, as the Wildcats took over for a 15-5 win.
The second game was closer for the Hurons but the Alpena team made it official for another win, 15-12, and did a repeat for the 15-12 third-game win as well. Individual stats include Ashley Fleming with 10 kills, 10 digs and one block. Dana Fairbanks contributed five digs, three set assists, four ace serves and three kills. Becky Bruning had five digs and one kill, while Lindsey Fleming had six digs, one ace serve and one kill. Carrie Haselhuhn with 11 assists, one dig and two kills, while Megan Hanson had five digs and eight set assists.
LAST SATURDAY the Huron began their season with an Invitational event at Traverse City Central. The ?get your feet wet? matches resulted in two wins and two losses for the Hurons against some pretty formidable foes. Haselhuhn contributed 34 set assists, eight digs, six ace serves, and three kills. After the Monday home opener the Huron match record stands at 2-3 with nothing in the conference record as yet.
IN THE JV games against Alpena Monday, the Hurons swept the Wildcats 15-8, 15-2, and 16-11 for a perfect record on the season. The Hurons will finish this year Saturday at the Delta Invitational. They will resume play January 3 at the CMU Invitational and will host Newberry/Alcona Thursday, January 8.
