Successful opening week for Posen volleyball

It was a good first week of the season for the Viking volleyball program.

The varsity won its first North Star League match to improve its match record to 2-0 and placed second Saturday in a tournament at Mackinaw City.

Two Vikings also were named to the all-tournament team, including most valuable player Shannon Ciarkowski.

The season started at the Mackinaw City JV tournament December 13 for the Posen JV with a first place finish, which was followed by wins at home against Wolverine and at Arenac Eastern Thursday.

THERE WEREN?T very many losses for either team in the first eight days of the season.

Coaches hope for more of the same after the calendar is flipped. The next action isn?t until January 5, when the Vikes travel to Hale.

For the varsity, the Mackinaw City tournament started in pool play early Saturday with Posen playing Engadine, Wolverine, Mackinaw City, Mackinac Island, and Northern Michigan Christian Academy.

?We played unbelievably well,? said coach Mandee Hincka. ?We played so good as a team.?

The girls displayed some of their best play of the early season, but it didn?t last as they lost in the finals to Mackinac Island, 15-4 and 1

5-0.

?We fell apart,? said Hincka of the finals as her squad settled for a runner-up finish.
