K of C members honored at anniversary banquet

20 years ago –January 31, 1984

Ambulances and dog control were among the topics at a meeting of the Presque Isle County Board of Commissioners. The board urged the Rogers City Hospital Area Ambulance Service not to retire an ambulance and learned that steps were to be taken to try to control the large number of stray dogs in Onaway.

Rogers City?s wrestling team surprised everyone, including themselves, when the Hurons won the Benzie Invitational tournament. It was the first tournament victory of the season for coach Warren Gleason?s charges. ?Our kids came out of the woodwork,? Gleason said. Of the 11 Huron wrestlers at the tournament, all 11 placed.

After nearly 35 years and countless hours behind the wheel, Wilbert Fleming retired from the Presque Isle County Road Commission. Fleming, a native of Hawks, began working as a laborer in March 1949, moved up to a small truck operator and then to a heavy blade truck operator.

Huron fans gathered in the Rogers City High School gym to see the Hurons defeat the Gaylord Blue Devils 61-56. Entering the game at 8-3, and 5-3 in the Michigan Huron Shores Conference, the Hurons were tied for second place with Cheboygan.

40 years ago — January 30, 1964

Two veteran members of the Knights of Columbus with a combined membership of over 100 years were honored at the 50th anniversary banquet. John Osborn presented certificates to Clarence Furtaw for 51 years of service and Frank Woods for 56 years of service in the K of C organization.

At a special meeting, the board of directors of the Presque Isle County Red Cross voted to discontinue the summer swimming classes which it had sponsored for 10 years.

The ?Teen of the Week? was Richard Brietzke, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Brietzke of Hawks. He belonged to the National Honor Society, Varsity Club and was a star player on the varsity football and basketball teams. Stanley Lentz was named Rogers City harbormaster for the 1964 boating season.

60 years ago– January 27, 1944

J.S. Blasky, chairman of the Presque Isle County

War Fund Drive, advised The Advance that the quota of $6,210 asked of the county had been raised in full. The final figures of contributions received totaled $6,339. Rudolph Dueltgen, who set a record that probably never will be duplicated, decided to not seek the office of village president of Rogers City. He had worked in the public sector for about 60 years.

Showing at the Rogers Theatre was Roddy McDowall in ?Lassie Come Home.? Other advertisers in The Advance included: D?Vincent-Meyer Insurance Agency (Rogers Theater building), C.A. Vogelheim Lumber Company, Black and White Market, and Perry Oil Company.
