Hurons take on St. Ignace after running by Hillman

The Huron track team, actually the varsity basketball team looking much like a track team, ran and jumped all over Hillman Tuesday in a 67-19 win over the visiting Tigers. It seemed like a track meet as the Hurons dashed to an incredible 21-0 lead before Hillman scored for the first time.

After two free throws at the 2:20 mark of the first quarter, the Tigers were silent again until the 1:49 mark of the second quarter as the Hurons ran laps around the visitors. Meanwhile, the Hurons vaulted to a 40-4 halftime lead, after leading 25-2 after one quarter. Senior Kyle Greene took control of the game early, scoring nine of the first 16 Huron points, each in convincing fashion. He scored on a hurdling layup, off a pass from Tim Cercone to make the score 9-0 with 4:51 left in the first quarter.

MOMENTS LATER, following Cercone?s basket and free throw, he shot to back-to-back dunks, effectively throwing a javelin through the hopes of the Tigers. ?I thought we really came out and played with a lot of energy,? said coach Karl Grambau. ?We ran really well and used our set offense very well.? Rogers City didn?t slow any in the second half, running the score to 55-4 before Hillman found the basket again with 2:31 left in the third quarter.

Greene collected three more dunks in the contest, including a one-hander off an Adam LaLonde pass. The Hurons played a controlled game, with most of their shots coming from inside the paint. The exception to the inside game came on Chris Paschke?s three-pointer at the 6:20 mark of the third period. Rogers City led 61-8 at the end of the third quarter. Greene led all scorers with 19 points, Cercone scored 16 and Isaac Momrik added eight in a dominating team performance.

LAST FRIDAY RC held off Newberry for a 62-53 win in Newberry. The Hurons led all the way, 12-10 at the end of the first quarter, 25-20 at halftime, and 45-39 at the end of the third quarter. LaLonde scored 16 to lead the Hurons in scoring. Clay Hilla scored 14 while Greene and Momrik each scored 10.

THE JVS ALSO took a pair of wins, topping Newberry 50-44 and defeating Hillman 75-38. In Newberry, the JV (6-1) trailed 20-9 at the end of the first quarter and 30-26 at halfti

me before storming back. ?Once again our fourth quarter defense prevailed by holding them to five points while we scored 16,? said coach Jason Wenzel. Justin Senff pumped in 16, Justin Wilbert added 12, and Derek McLennan scored nine. Against Hillman, Rogers City led all the way, after jumping out to an 18-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and 36-22 at halftime.

McLennan had 27 points and Senff scored 24 for a big one-two punch for the home team. Rogers City (5-2) hosts St. Ignace Friday in what likely will be a show of running-and-gunning teams. Each team has just one conference loss, each to Rudyard.

The Hurons play at Inland Lakes Tuesday. The JV contest starts at 6 p.m. with the varsity to follow.
