Bulldogs taken by Hurons

The Hurons ended a two-game losing streak Tuesday and hope that they are back on track after a one-week bump in the road. Losses to Pickford and Posen slowed the Huron express last week but a 58-52 win over Inland Lakes Tuesday has them poised for their last three games. The hosts Newberry on Parents Night Friday then travel to Hillman on Tuesday and host Posen March 5, in changes from the original schedule.

?This was one that we really needed to win,? said Huron coach Karl Grambau after Tuesday?s win. ?No matter what it took or how it went we really needed to win this game to get some confidence back again because we really took a shellacking over in Posen. We had a few more turnovers than we would have wanted, but Inland Lakes played us tough.?

IT WAS A game of streaks and runs, each team taking turns getting hot and then cold. Inland Lakes scored the first basket of the game and held a 19-16 lead after the first quarter. Rogers City pressed much of the second quarter while the Bulldogs settled into a man-to-man.

Kyle Greene, who led the Hurons with 22 points, again treated the fans to three dunks, the first coming at the 3:06 mark of the first quarter. On the other end of the court, Bulldog senior center Zak Lejuene was everywhere, tipping in rebounds, nailing three-pointers, and hustling on defense.

His 28 points led all scorers. The Bulldogs led 30-24 at the half.

ROGERS CITY came out of the locker room looking to get back in the game. Tim Cercone hit a put-back shot, and then fed Greene for a basket. Adam LaLonde?s six-footer at 5:30 ended a 6-0 run and later he tied the game at 34-34 with a rebound shot. Greene?s dunk, and a baseline drive made the Huron lead five points, then Cercone took a pass from Greene and hit a runner to give the Hurons their biggest lead of the game at 42-35. Inland Lakes could get no closer than three points the rest of the way. Cercone had 16 points and LaLonde scored 12.

THE JV Hurons trailed 12-10 after the first quarter, then poured on the steam in a 66-37 stomping of the Bulldogs. Coach Jason Wenzel?s team outscored Inland Lakes 23-10 in the second quarter to take control of the game. A 17-6 spread in the third quarter helped the cause. Justin Senff scored nine of his game-high 19 points in the third quarter. Chris Santini had 15 points, including three three-pointers. Justin Wilbert and Andy Tulgestke added eight points each.
