A clarity hearing was scheduled March 3 as the next step in an effort by a citizens? group to recall four members of the Rogers City Area Schools Board of Education. Members of the Citizens for Academic Excellence were waiting to see if wording on petitions was clear enough so they could begin circulating them. The four board members targeted voted February 14 against a motion to extend superintendent Roger Benner?s contract.

Saying he needed to ?give a little more time to myself and my family,? Jerry Smigelski resigned after seven years coaching football at Posen High School. ?Seven years is a long time,? Smigelski told The Advance. ?We accomplished some of the things we set out to do, such as revamping the football program and keeping it alive when it looked like football might be dropped.?

The 1994 Knights of Columbus Snow Derby resembled a Mud Bog. ?It is exactly 50 degrees warmer than it was this time last year,? said Bob Wodkowski, chairman of the Snow Derby Committee, at the event?s opening ceremonies. The weekend previously, the high reached 20 degrees. The high for the weekend was 56 degrees on Saturday. Someone had crossed the word ?snow? off a welcome poster inside the Knights of Columbus Hall and had written in the word ?surf.?

Sophomore Robin Koss and freshman Darlene Taratuta were named to the ?A? honor roll at Posen High School.

The Cups and Saucers team of the Koffee Klatch League won team honors in the city women?s bowling tournament. Team members included Kay Rhode, Mabel Bredow, Dorothy Grulke, Joyce Schwiesow and Marlene Schalk. Individual winners were Donna Daugherty, singles; Jane Momrik, all-events; Janice Nagel and Nancy Ide, doubles.

Max Hogan?s basket with three seconds remaining in double overtime gave Rogers City a 62-61 win at Boyne City.

30 years ago, February 21, 1974

A total of 48 bottles of liquor were reported stolen from the Liquor Control Commission retail outlet on Bradley Highway in Rogers City, according to Rogers City chief of police Leo Hilla.

Some 25 of 50 White Rock chickens stolen from the property of Rueben Wirgau were recovered, according to a spokesman for the Presque Isle County Sheriff?s Department. The birds were stolen some time during the evening of Saturday, February 2 from Wirgau?s coop. The chickens were found by two rabbit hunters in an abandoned house at the corner of Petersville Road and Ristow Highway.

Doors were closed at Rogers City High School when a weekend fire in one of the boilers cut the heating capacity to below operating temperatures. Fortunately, replacement parts were available from the manufacturer and the boiler was ready to go by the time school started again on Monday.

The Rogers City Hurons pulled back into a first place tie with the Cheboygan Chiefs by defeating St. Ignace, 52-38. Both teams had a 5-2 r

ecord in the Huron Straits Conference. John Paradise scored 20 points and had eight rebounds, while Tim Berg contributed 11.

The senior ?Mock Elections? took place for the yearbook with the following results: most intelligent and most likely to succeed — Marcia Weller and James Przybyla; most athletic — Barb Draper and Dick Brietzke; best looking — Laurel Miller and John Raymond; wittiest — Patty O?Toole and Dave Garno; class Casanova — Mike DeWyre; class flirt — Ronna Spira; cutest blushes — Deanna Rieger and Bob Mieler; best dressed — Ronna Spira and John Raymond.
