Huron spikers sweep Petoskey

The Rogers City volleyball team swept the homecourt Petoskey games clean 15-12, 15-9, and 15-11 Monday and celebrated Parents? Night to boot. The wins upped the match record to 20-17-5 while the conference record remains at 10-2 for the Hurons. Only three matches remain before the district run March 5-6 in Harbor Springs, so the push is on as the season comes to a conclusion.

?The team played good together and they played with desire to win,? said coach Kristy Smolinski. ?After the weekend (at Ferris State) we were looking forward to a win, and Parents? Night made it special for the girls.? In the Petoskey match Ashley Fleming had 10 kills, 21 digs, two blocks and three ace serves, while Becky Bruning had five kills, seven digs, five blocks, and two ace serves. Dana Fairbanks contributed eight kills, six digs, one block and five aces, while Megan Hanson and Carrie Haselhuhn had nine and 10 set assists respectively.

THE HURONS traveled to the Ferris State Invitational Saturday and posted some disappointing results, although many games were close-fought battles. In pool play all started out well against Marlette, 13-15, 15-4, and 15-11, but soured after a loss to Fremont, 6-15 and 10-15. In the power pool the match with Eaton Rapids was a close battle in three that ended in a Huron loss, 15-11, 6-15, and 12-15. Play continued against Midland, and the Hurons once again put on a strong fight that ended in another close loss, 15-12, 13-15, and 14-16.

In bracket play, the Hurons were pitted against Kenowa Hills and were eliminated 8-15 and 1-15. Ashley Fleming had 39 kills, 42 digs and eight aces, while Bruning had 17 kills and 26 digs. Tiffiny Krueger contr

ibuted 30 digs and 16 aces serves, while Fairbanks had 24 digs and 15 kills. Sara Dove had 11 digs, one kill and six aces. Hanson and Haselhuhn had 54 and 20 set assists respectively.

THE HURONS traveled to Rudyard last Thursday for a makeup match and claimed victory for both for the JV and the varsity teams. The varsity finished the regular season conference with a sweep of the Bulldogs, 15-10, 15-8, and 15-12. Ashley Fleming chalked up 14 kills, 17 digs and five aces, while Krueger had 14 digs and seven aces. Lindsey Fleming contributed eight kills and five digs, while Hanson had six digs and 16 set assists.

The Hurons will travel to the St. Louis Invitational Saturday, then on to Pickford/St. Marys Monday. They take on Pellston and Gaylord Wednesday as the season winds down.
