RC takes win over Cardinals; face Alcona in make-up

The Hurons used size and numbers to blitz the Onaway Cardinals Tuesday, 67-43. ?We wanted to play well tonight because the districts are in this gym and I thought we started a little bit slow, but then we got a couple of fast breaks and got things going. We had a pretty good first half,? said Huron coach Karl Grambau.

The Cards tried to slow down the pace in the early going, and took a 10-9 lead with 1:38 left in the first quarter. Onaway played with seven players, with several out because of injuries. Senior center Kyle Greene, who led the Hurons with 17 points, hit both ends of a one-and-one to tie the game at 10-10. Junior guard Chris Paschke?s fast break hoop and Tim Cercone?s two free throws gave the Hurons the last six points of the quarter, and the lead, for good.

THE HURONS used a collapsing zone to take away Onaway?s inside game while the offense cashed in on several fast-break opportunities. Rogers City went on an 18-4 run over the first four minutes of the second quarter to put the game out of reach. Greene provided three highlight dunks, as the Hurons established their dominance inside over the much shorter Card defenders.

?I thought we took care of business in the last 12 minutes of the first half,? Grambau said. ?When we th

row that extra pass we look good.? Rogers City led 44-17 at the half and 57-27 at the end of the third quarter. Cercone and John Jaeger each had 14 points for the Hurons while Rob McLennan led Onaway with 12.

THE JUNIOR varsity Hurons used tough defense to score a 60-22 win over the Cardinals. Rogers City led 15-5 at the end of the first quarter and 30-13 at halftime. A 19-2 edge in the third quarter put the game away for coach Jason Wenzel?s charges. Nick Kowalski scored eight while Eric Kieliszewski scored six in the game. Chris Santini and Derek McLennan each had 16 points to lead the Hurons in scoring.

The Hurons (10-3) hope to extend their winning streak to six as they play a make-up game in Alcona tonight, then play in Pickford Tuesday. They have Friday off.
