Shivaree deemed success despite setbacks

Although the Black Lake Sturgeon Shivaree saw lower numbers than in past years, (1,500 people participated in the event this year as opposed to nearly 3,000 in previous years) organizers still considered it a success. The festival experienced its first setback when it was forced to move from the usual location on Black Lake to a site just north of Onaway. Once there, organizers found they were not able to build a race track for two events, the snowmobile drag races and the motorcycle ice racing, which may account for the lower than normal attendance.

THE FINAL SETBACK occurred on Friday as one of the tents blew down under the strong winds blowing across the field. However, organizers were determined to move on and feel they were successful in creating a fun atmosphere for all who came. The event kicked off on Friday night with perfect conditions and a beautiful night for the Torchlight Cross Country and Snowshoe Safari. Possibly the most successful new event was the much anticipated ?Fear Factor? where winner Alicia Riley of Onaway earned her $500 prize by dodging paintballs for 30 seconds, eating ?cowboy caviar? also known as buffalo testicles, and finally fighting her way out of a coffin while handcuffed in only 22 seconds.

THERE WERE NO winners for the sturgeon fishing contest this year as not all five sturgeons had been caught by the end of the festival. Probably the most satisfied customers were the children with tons of kids? games provided throughout the weekend including face painting and pony rides sponsored by a local 4-H group.

Event planners look forward to bringing these events back for next year and hope Mother Nature will cooperate enough to bring the event home to Black Lake once more.
