Vikings make it 11 straight and take a half game lead in NSL

The Posen basketball team won its 11th straight game of the season at Atlanta Tuesday, 59-54, and moved into a half game lead in front of idle Mio. The Vikings (10-1 North Star League, 11-1 overall) came back from 10 points down against the host Huskies and took a one point lead into the fourth quarter, 42-41, before putting the game away in the final eight minutes.

The win gives Posen the season sweep over a pesky Atlanta team which the Vikings could face in districts at Johannesburg-Lewiston High School, March 9-12. The drawing for district pairings is Wednesday, February 18.

POSEN WAS led by junior Matt Ponik with 18 points and 12 rebounds, but the squad received a lift from point guard Luke Hentkowski, who has been out of action with an injury for eight weeks. He scored 10 points in his return, all in the second half. Coach Ron Misiak said Atlanta was using its guards to crash the boards, which created extra scoring opportunities. The Huskies had a seven point lead, 29-22, at halftime. ?We talked about putting bodies on the guards,? said Misiak. It seemed to open things up for the Vikes. Junior Aaron

Hincka had 15 points, while senior Ron Kroll had a dozen. The winning streak, which started December 19, has gone unnoticed in the state polls.

THE VIKINGS have a better record than some of the schools receiving honorable mentions in the Associated Press Class D polls released Tuesday. The win streak reached 10 on Saturday, when the Vikings defeated Fairview, 70-64. Hincka led the charge against the host Eagles with a game-high 27 points and 16 rebounds. The Fairview game was to be played Friday but was postponed because of the weather. Ponik added 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Kroll scored 10 points.

The JV split its two games last week, winning against Atlanta, 60-49, but dropping its game against Fairview, 63-44. Posen plays the rest of its games this month at home, starting off with Hale tomorrow. The Vikings will host Fairview on Tuesday.
