Vikings split road VB matches

It was an unpleasant trip to Mackinaw City Monday for the Posen volleyball teams in more ways than one. First the bus, about 10 miles from Cheboygan, suffered a tire blowout. The tire was repaired and the teams arrived more than an hour late. Then the varsity lost the match to the host Comets. ?We just weren?t ready to play,? said coach Mandee Hincka. The Vikings took game one, 15-9, but dropped the next two, 7-15 and 5-15.

The loss came on the heels of an exciting North Star League match last Thursday with Fairview. Both squads traded blows, with the host Eagles winning the first game, 5-15, but Posen came back to earn the win in game two, 15-11. Game three went right down to the wire with the Vikings coming out on top, 17-15. No individual statistics were made available. The final match of the regular season is next Thursday against Fairview.

It?ll be the last action before Posen travels to Johannesburg-Lewiston High School March 6, for a 10 a.m. district semifinal game with Gaylord St. Mary. Johannesburg-Lewiston and Atlanta will play in the other semifinal game. The winners will vie for the district title. The Posen JV is a heartbeat away from its second consecutive NSL title as they breezed by Mackinaw City and Fairview.

Both matches were over after two games. The Vikes defeated MC, 15-7 and 15-12, and the host Eagles, 15-3 and 15-13. Kim Wekwert had four service points and an assist, while Michelle Mulka had two service points and two kills at Mackinaw City. Amanda Pieczynski had 10 service points, one kill and three digs at Fairview, while Jenny Ciarkowski had 11 assists. The JV has a 14-1 NSL record.
