Hurons fall to Mio in district championship, 33-29

ONAWAY-After running up 93 points in a run-and-gun game with Onaway earlier in the week, Mio used a slow-down offense to defeat the Hurons in the district basketball championship Friday, 33-29. The Thunderbolts nailed four three-pointers in the first quarter to built a 17-10 lead.

The highlight of the first quarter came at the 1:39 mark with the Hurons trailing 15-8. Senior center Kyle Greene went end-to-end, finishing with a strong one-handed dunk to bring the Huron crowd alive.

Mio played slow-down ball, comfortable to limit the Hurons’ chances as the half ended with Miio leading 23-16.

Clay Hilla hit a free throw to cut the lead to 23-17, then Tim Cercone drained a reverse layup after Mio connected on an open three-pointer.

Two straight buckets from Greene made the score 29-23 at the end of the third quarter.

The Hurons were able to cut the lead to two at 31-29, but couldn’t get over the hump. Rogers City ended its season with a 17-6 record.
